BBK DVP953HD karaoke DVD player: not a bad choice for a second video system, kitchen or cottage

The design of the DVD player is classical, with a strict rectangular shape, the front panel has a loading tray, a small screen, several buttons, a microphone jack and a USB port. There are three buttons on the front panel with the most necessary operations: “Network”, “Open/Close Tray” and “Play/Pause. Apparently this is done for the express check in the store, when the buyer rightly does not trust the sticker that “all equipment has already been tested”.

DVD-video players

Interface

On the back of the player there is a composite video output, audio jacks – analog RCA, digital coaxial and HDMI 1.3.

The price of the device doesn’t pretend to integrate it into an “expensive” system, so

The presence of HDMI, perhaps due to the player’s ability to “speed up” video to FULL HD. About the USB port and 3.5 mm input for a microphone, we have already mentioned.

Media player

The media player is rather a nice addition to the DVD drive. According to the manufacturer, the unit can read flash drives formatted in FAT 16 and FAT 32, – respectively, do not allow writing files larger than 4 GB, – so “heavy” mkv will not go.

Of course, the device can upscale videos to 1080p resolution, but it’s not what you’d call a full-fledged media player.

A 32 GB stick, with a multi-level structure, was read by the device in 8 seconds.

This is not a bad result. In addition, recall that the volume of external media visible to the unit – one of the stumbling blocks for DVD-players with USB-port.

And if we take into account that in most big stores sellers often push you to buy accessories, for example, a flash drive that “you’ll need anyway”, then you won’t have to worry whether the player will read it, if you want to get rid of the stickers.

All the files that we tested, both video and audio, did not cause any difficulties. The built-in USB-player played all the offered files except, of course, mkv , even those that the stationary media player of the famous producer could not play. Files of different formats are played without lags and jerks, when rewinding neither “brakes” nor freezes were observed.

Drive

The device can play all kinds of DVDs, except Blu-ray DVDs and HD DVDs.

The ejectable plastic tray is a bit flimsy, though, and sometimes I heard a noticeable murmur, but when I switch to playback mode the murmur vanished.

No problems with reading – even not particularly clean “multifilm” pirated ones – to be tested in extreme mode. The same thing with the self-written “blanks”. All the same, according to the manufacturers’ assurances, the device has a highly sensitive lens that allows you to play even damaged discs.

Functionality

In addition to its basic function – reading DVD-ROMs and USB-drives, the unit has a karaoke function. The singer’s efforts will not be missed and will be evaluated by the smart system.

In the kit a present from the company, – a karaoke disk for 500 songs, but the microphone will have to dopluchit.

There is also a useful function of Q-Play, which allows you to skip the unreelable commercials. If you want you can use DVP953HD as a device for copying files on a flash drive. For audio files, the CD-RIP function is used, the files are compressed at a given bitrate and, if desired, can be created

ID3 tags. For video files there is a similar Copy Function, but already copied without compression.

Among the useful functions are child protection or should I say, protection of the children from suspicious content , automatic choice of supply voltage ~ 110-250 V, 50/60 Hz and short circuit protection, but we did not dare to check it.

Another interesting innovation is the ability to display a joystick-style menu of basic functions: play, pause, rewind and stop. When you press the button with the drawn eye on the screen, there appears an interactive joystick, when you move the similar buttons on the remote control, the selected function on the screen is activated.

The time is displayed only the played time from the beginning and the total time. To tell the truth, you can also display a “time line” with the moving cursor – the “Browser” function. Frankly speaking, all functions are more convenient to view on the screen, the display is very small and serves more as an indication of switching on.

There is also a Zoom function, in which the zoom steps are not “going round”, but stop at the extreme point, excluding the possibility of missing the desired scale.

Picture

The DVD video player has on board a 108 MHz/12 bit DAC. For its price category the device produces a “picture” without any noticeable problems, loud noises, etc.p. artifacts.

I was pleased that the menu has extensive options for adjusting the picture – you can adjust to your liking sharpness, gamma, brightness contrast, hue, and

picture saturation.

Result

For the price of the device is one of the most inexpensive on the market in the presence of up-scaling functions, karaoke and USB-port. With the declared functions it copes fairly, not a bad option for the second video system, kitchen or cottage.

Joyful: in spite of the price – the presence of “up-scaling”, ample opportunities to correct the image.

Disappointing: small screen, fragile loading tray.

Tip: If you plan to use the RCA output to listen to uncompressed audio through a receiver or amplifier with a coaxial input , experiment with the coaxial connection. It’s quite possible that the DAC in the player and the DAC in the receiver will sound differently.
