A mini review of the Nikon Coolpix P7800 compact camera

Senior-level Coolpix P cameras have had their ups and downs. There were successful models and outright weak ones. But lately Nikon has managed to find a problem-free direction.

As the main answer to competitors, the P7800 offers a more versatile zoom. It has a slightly lower aperture ratio, but the increased maximum focal length of 200 mm gives more options for frame arrangement and expands the list of available scenes. Basic shooting specs are up to current standard: large backlit 12MP CMOS sensor, up to 8fps continuous shooting support, RAW format, pluggable ND filter.

The camera, of course, gives the photographer the ability to manually adjust almost any shooting parameter. The P7800 has both a built-in flash and a hot shoe, but what really sets it apart from the competition is the ability to wirelessly control external flashes. Only the Olympus XZ-2 has this. The camera is compatible with a fairly wide range of accessories for Nikon F SLR cameras, including even an external controllable microphone and GPS receiver. The camera itself has Wi-Fi for wireless communication with the outside world.

The display can be rotated to almost any angle. In addition to it, you can use the eyepiece to compose frames. The electronic viewfinder seems to have good resolution, but it’s too small and useful only in extreme cases.

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 is a compact camera with impressive features, but is it worth the investment? Does it deliver exceptional image quality? How does it perform in low-light conditions? Is the manual control easy to navigate for beginners? Is the camera durable enough for everyday use? Any input on the battery life? Can the camera capture fast-moving objects with precision? Is the autofocus accurate? Overall, does this camera meet expectations and justify its price tag?

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 compact camera offers good image quality with its 12.2-megapixel sensor and f/2.0-4.0 lens, producing sharp and detailed photos with accurate colors. In well-lit conditions, the camera performs exceptionally well, capturing vibrant and clear images. However, in low-light situations, the P7800 tends to struggle, as noise becomes more pronounced at higher ISO levels. The camera does have a built-in pop-up flash which helps in improving low-light performance to some extent, but it is not as effective as some other cameras in its class. Overall, the Nikon Coolpix P7800 is a solid option for daytime photography but may not be the best choice for low-light shooting.
