The Lumix DMC-GF3 mirrorless camera gets super-fast focusing

After the third generation of the “basic” line of compact systems Lumix G, Panasonic has released an updated “miniature” mirrorless camera Lumix DMC-GF3. It would be more accurate to say “new” because the changes in the camera are no less than improvements, and the essence of the camera has changed considerably.

The key idea behind the GF3 as well as its older sister G3 is to move away from trying to create a stripped down DSLR to create a functional, powerful compact with “SLR” quality. The idea, in our opinion, is exceptionally good.

Compact Cameras

Resolution – 12.1 Megapixel, Zoom – 14 mm, Display – 3″, F2.5

To implement the conceived developers have tried to reduce the size and weight of the aluminum body 108 × 67 × 33 mm, 264 g without the lens , removing on the way and some “extra” elements of design: the body without the “hot shoe” and proprietary universal connector for external accessories, and a stereo microphone was replaced by a simple monophonic.

Pretentious photographers might not like it, but it’s hard to imagine an amateur attaching a big, external flash to a small camera. At the same time, these limitations save both size and weight, and, importantly, price.

The sensor remains almost unchanged – 12 megapixel Live MOS sensor, though with a slightly higher basic sensitivity level 160-6400 ISO .

But electronics responsible for image processing and camera control have changed: a new tri-core processor Venus Engine FHD and a corresponding set of functions have been installed in the novelty.

Above all, the camera received ultra-fast focusing, which analyzes data at a speed of 120 frames per second and in the end brings the optics to sharpness in about 0.18 seconds.

Thanks to the updated shutter speed has increased slightly and the continuous shooting speed – up to 3.8 fps. Interestingly, the electronics have become not only more powerful, but also more economical: the developers point out that although the battery capacity of GF3 decreased, battery life has increased.

The camera body, like the body of the new G3, got rid of harsh chopped lines, becoming more rounded and “soft.

Despite the compact size and the apparent aim at fans switching from compact cameras, the creators have not forgotten about the comfort of management.

Unlike older models GF3 differs simplified, more “amateur” interface: there are less buttons on the body, and they are not very adapted for operational work.

The main interface, as in the previous model – a successful and fast touchscreen plus touch system including, of course, such functions as focusing and shooting by pressure .

The main method of communication with smart stuff – touch-sensitive display. Although it can be realized on it some very advanced features such as quick focus and shooting by clicking on the object in the frame, the developers are placing emphasis on the rather unpretentious amateur photography in the mode “point-and-shoot.

In addition to it was introduced a rotary dial, located around the navipad – it speeds up the options and setting options. However, no one will force anything: the camera is equipped with a modern version of the proprietary intelligent mode iA+ and easily manages to determine the shooting conditions and suitable settings in both photography and video recording.

Finally, amateur photographers will get a set of popular filters that allow for additional photo embellishment such as the notorious miniature effect .

The cost of the camera is relatively low, so GF3 entered into stiff competition with at least the same miniature Sony, moreover, this camera has all chances to win.

At least if you’re looking for a really compact and capable camera, we’d give the Lumix GF3 our utmost consideration.

The camera comes in four possible colors of the body: black, red, brown and white black and white are the prettiest . It is supposed to be available in two kits with different lenses to choose from: a standard 14-42mm and a flat “fix” 14mm F2.5 Eq. 28mm .

The latter has a slightly better aperture ratio, good for certain types of photography and is also compact, but many users may not seem versatile enough.

on subjects thanks to its Contrast AF system. This feature, combined with the camera’s compact and lightweight design, makes it an ideal choice for capturing fast-moving scenes and shooting on the go. But does the fast focusing of the DMC-GF3 come at the cost of image quality or any other limitations?

Wow, the Lumix DMC-GF3 mirrorless camera sounds impressive with its super-fast focusing! I’m wondering if this translates into capturing sharp and clear images even in challenging conditions such as low light or fast-paced action? Can someone who has used this camera share their experience regarding its performance in different shooting scenarios?

How does the Lumix DMC-GF3 achieve super-fast focusing in a mirrorless camera? Is it due to advanced technology or specific features? I’m curious to know how this camera stands out in terms of autofocus speed compared to others in its category.
