The kettle test: which ones will be hotter??

Electric kettles… Many people do not remember already, but only a quarter of the century ago these appliances have made a little revolution in the American housewives’ everyday life and have displaced from the kitchens kettles with whistles and electric kettles. The main difference from their predecessors is not only that they boil water in just a few minutes, but gas stove kettles can easily compete with them in speed. The main thing – the electric kettles automatically shut off after finishing boiling. This is why they have won the hearts and that is why they have become an attribute of every kitchen, regardless of whether there are gas or electric stoves.

Some are hotter than others?

The spiral open heating element in kettles has been replaced by a disc-shaped, hidden heating element. They have learned to rotate on their stands for 360⁰ in any direction. The power of the devices increased, metal and glass significantly overshadowed plastic, design and size have changed, but it is the kettles that remain the most popular electrical appliances in kitchens. They are being bought despite the economic crises and the general state of affairs.

Of course, kettles, like all appliances, are divided into classes. There are modest models from which you do not expect much: it will work fine if they last a year, and there are samples created by great designers, which in the future will take their rightful place in modern art museums.

We decided to test the kettles, which, in our opinion, are truly modern now and belong to the third generation of this equipment, the devices that can not only boil water, but also heat it to a certain temperature.

TESTING ALL!

We invited everyone to our test – we received a huge number of responses from companies. As a result, we were able to test the work of 14 kettles from different manufacturers, and this is not all: there are many more models and manufacturers on the market.

Most of our participants were kettles produced for different companies in Chinese factories. Most of the models are metal, with a capacity of 1.7 l. But there are glass kettles and even a ceramic one among the tested samples. Besides, two teapots took part in the test, they replace both simple teapots and teapots: they boil water first and then brew tea. We didn’t brew tea, but we checked the same thing with them as with all other models – how they cope with the function of boiling and heating water.

I must say that modern teapots are very “voracious” and consume quite a lot of electricity. The maximum power of seven participants in the test is designed for modern electrical wiring – 2400 watts, five slightly lower – 2200 watts, the lowest – 1800 watts in a small ceramic kettle by volume.

Warranty is almost all standard – 1 year, but there are two models, whose manufacturers have put a longer warranty period, which is, of course, a certain competitive advantage.

FUNCTIONS

All models participating in the test unite versatility: they not only boil water, but also heat it to certain temperatures. Moreover, most kettles can maintain a predetermined temperature for a certain time.

As we can see, the models vary in the choice of temperatures. 70 ° C, 80 ° C, 90 ° C – this set has all devices, 60 ° C and 50 ° C are less common, and there are models in which the heating to intermediate values – 65 ° C, 75 ° C, 85 ° C, 95 ° C.

In general, you can choose a kettle with any capabilities. You just have to wonder if you need the temperature range? If you’re cooking baby food, you should pay attention to the models that heat water up to 60 ° C. But you can not blindly trust the readings of kettles, we recommend that you still measure the temperature of the mixture.

It’s just worth thinking about whether you need a wide range of temperatures, and so on. While for one model from the test, it allows you to choose more options than simple heating, for others, it automatically heats up to the degrees you set. As for how long the water will remain hot, the range is quite wide, from 2 hours to 20 minutes. The only question is whether you need to keep the water at a certain temperature for 2 hours if you can always heat it to that value in less than 5 minutes?

In the test there are kettles that do not have the function of maintaining the temperature at all. Coincidence or not, these models are the most inexpensive among the test. So if you do not need heating, you can not overpay.

In general, decide for yourself what of these you need, and what will remain unclaimed.

TEST #1. SPEED

We measured the time it takes each kettle to boil 1 liter of water. Admittedly, this isn’t the most important factor: A difference of 1-2 minutes won’t solve anything. But it’s interesting to see who’s the fastest.

Of course, we measured under similar conditions: the initial water temperature was 21-22°C, we plugged each kettle into the same socket, measured the readings with the same thermometer. Of course, we understand that when we measure again, the results may be different: suddenly there was a power surge, the initial temperature was slightly different, the amount of water differed by a few milliliters, etc.d. and t.p.

It is interesting, that the obtained water temperature in all kettles is below 100 ° C. At the same time, water in all devices was boiling, steam was streaming from their spouts, and almost all displays showed 100 ° C.

Although the models are dense, the difference between the fastest and the slowest one is almost 2 minutes. But it’s understandable: the models have different power and different material. The 9 kettles follow each other with a few seconds difference, the difference between them will not be noticed in everyday use.

TEST #2. FINE

Element

This factor is more important than time, although it too should not be overestimated. An interesting general trend: kettles heat less accurately at lower temperatures. There’s the biggest difference between the reported and received results. Higher temperatures have higher accuracy.

You’d think – well, what does a 1 or 2 degree difference mean?? No one will notice it. Still, if you claim the kettle heats water to 80°C, be kind enough to provide 80°C.

Let’s see which of the manufacturers is the most honest in its promises.

We’ve added up all the differences between the advertised and actual values and divided them by the number of measured temperatures, and the results are as follows.

As we can see, there are record-breakers in accuracy, the average value of the difference between their declared and actual temperature is less than 1 degree. There are models, which up to certain temperatures heating is carried out literally with apothecary accuracy, but others show a difference of several degrees. One kettle surprised us: the display showed the actual temperature, and it was much closer to the measured temperature than the stated. This model was for us the most honest among the tested ones.

CONTROL THE WAY YOU LIKE IT

All of these devices have a control panel. It is difficult to evaluate it, because in many ways it is a matter of taste and habit.

We have developed three criteria:

1. Simplicity – did we manage to turn on the kettle without reading the manual and how quickly we got used to the algorithm.

2. How many buttons do you need to press to “run” the program.

3. What’s there – indications, lights, buzzer, display features.

We did not put any marks, just tried to collect all the important features of the control, so you can determine whether it suits you or not.

AND I LIKE IT

We understand that we can tell a lot about the benefits of a particular model, the accuracy of temperature maintenance and a variety of modes, but still one of the main criteria for choosing the kettle is its design and of course the price . This is why manufacturers are trying to give their products a unique look.

Let’s look at our members from this point of view:

ARIETE 2894 looked more like a glass jug than a usual kettle. BOSCH TWK 861 – combination of metal and plastic, horizontal stripe, harmonizing with the control panel of large household appliances, a wide window water level indicator. CASO WK220 – it has a lid with a transparent window and an original display. HOTPOINT-ARISTON WK 24E AX0 and ELECTROLUX 0EEWA7800 – stylish and bright, complex geometry, each in its own way unique. ELEMENT WF11MB – brilliant in every way, impetuous and daring. OURSSON EK1775MD – bright lush color, bright display – it will not go unnoticed in the kitchen or on the counter. RUSSELL HOBBS 20160 – with changing backlight of the body during operation, its individuality becomes apparent during operation, when, like a chameleon, it changes color. KITFORT KT-601 – design features are dictated by functionality. It’s not just a kettle, we’re looking at a tea kettle, so it comes with a removable lid and a container for brewing. Ceramic SC-EK24 C02 – cozy and more like a teapot than a complex electronic device. Glass MYSTERY MEK-1628 allows you to admire the process of playing bubbles when boiling water. REDMOND RK-M137D and MIDEA MK-M 317C2A-E8 are universal, suitable for any interior. ROLSEN RK-2715MD different handle control, thanks to it looks light and mobile.

I’m curious to know which kettles will be hotter in “The Kettle Test.” Are they going to compare different brands or types of kettles? Will they measure the temperature of the water they produce? Or is it perhaps a test to see which kettle heats up faster? I would love more information on this!
