The new compact Sony NEX-5R with interchangeable optics offers high image quality, stylish design and compact size. A sensor the size of an APS-C sized digital SLR camera with an effective resolution of 16.1 megapixels guarantees highly detailed photos and crystal clear Full HD movies. In America, the new compact digital camera Sony NEX-5R with interchangeable optics goes on sale in mid-October 2012. The model will be available in three colors: black, white and silver.

By combining a large sensor with a wide range of interchangeable optics, this mirrorless camera delivers all the benefits of DSLR-quality images with increased ease and compactness. This camera will be a step up for those who have used compact cameras, or a great second camera for amateur photographers who don’t want to compromise on image quality and travel light.

An APS-C sized sensor with effective resolution of 16.1 megapixels delivers highly detailed images and crystal clear Full HD movies. This is supplemented by a powerful BIONZ Image Processor that delivers high-quality, low-noise images – even in dark, low-light environments at ISO speeds up to 25600.

For the first time, a Sony interchangeable lens camera features a fast hybrid autofocus system that combines phase and contrast autofocus for high-quality shooting in all conditions. Phase auto-focus quickly determines the distance to the subject. Contrast AF is then activated for extremely accurate autofocus.

In continuous shooting mode with speed priority NEX-5R camera automatically switches to phase auto focus. Enjoy DSLR-like autofocus performance in fast-moving action shots at up to 10fps.

Since its release, the rapid hybrid autofocus system is supported by the following lenses: E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS E 55-210mm F4-6.3 OSS E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS E 24mm F1.8 ZA Sonnar T*. Thanks to firmware updates, the range of lenses supporting rapid hybrid autofocus will continue to grow.

Frame composition, adjustments, shooting and reviewing pictures becomes a real pleasure with the intuitive LCD touchscreen. The wheel and Fn button completes its functionality – a versatile combination for any photographer used to the flexibility of DSLR cameras. Plus the new Touch Shutter feature, making it easier than ever to capture your perfect moment. You simply press the main subject you want to photograph on the screen and the camera focuses on it and releases the shutter. No need to press the shutter button.

Touch screen with clear, bright images rotates 180° for easy shooting of self-portraits at arm’s length. Photographers will also appreciate the ability to display a grid to help keep the horizon line in landscapes and architectural shots.

Full HD video capabilities have also been enhanced with a new auto-slow shutter feature, giving extra brilliance to low-light video clips. The camera detects low-light conditions and night scenes and automatically switches to a slower shutter mode for brighter shots.

The NEX-5R is Sony’s first interchangeable lens digital camera with built-in Wi-Fi capabilities for easy image transfer, saving and viewing. Photos and videos can be transferred wirelessly to any smartphone or tablet PC with the free PlayMemories Mobile app service installed.

Another use for this function is to transfer all data directly to a PC connected to the network, for easier backups without removing the memory card and connecting a cable. Photos stored with the NEX-5R can also be viewed directly on any DLNA-compatible TV without the need for an HDMI cable. Transfer via hotspot or bypass the need for a router and get camera shots directly on your TV with Wi-Fi Direct.

Applications available since release include Picture Effect+, Bracket Pro, Multi Frame NR, Smart Remote Control and Direct Upload. Sony plans to release new apps such as Photo Retouch and later Time-lapse and Cinematic Photo.

New accessories include the LCS-SL10 – a compact and stylish soft system bag ideal for carrying the camera, extra lenses and outdoor accessories – and the PCK-LM13 semi-rigid film for stylishly protecting the LCD screen with anti-fingerprint finish.
