Test measurements of the Vivitek H1060. What does the gamma curve bring to the screen?

Trust but verify! The visual test has already shown that the new projector

Vivitek H1060

Projects a pretty decent picture on the screen. But how decent, to be exact? For our advanced readers, as well as for those who want to know a little more about the image quality of the new model, we present the results of measurements with our comments.

Test Methodology

Test conducted in a professional studio, in a totally dark room, with neutral walls, where color distortion is practically eliminated. Stewart canvas with 1 gain was used as a screen.1.

The measurements were taken with an X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter. HCFR Colorimeter 3.1.0.6. This program understands the correction profiles supplied by the manufacturer and the spectral correction profiles designed to increase the accuracy of measurements โ€“ by correcting the measurement results depending on the types of illumination of the display device CRT, CCFL, W-LED, WideGamut, Projector and others .

CIE76 ab is used as the color deviation formula. Contrast is defined as the difference between the brightness of the white and black screens, measured โ€œon reflection.

Movie โ€“ This mode is clearly conceived by the manufacturer close to the THX standard. High gamma value in the range 2.4 makes the image darker and deeper. Color gamut, unfortunately, is not as wide as that of more expensive projectors. The reds and blues are reproduced very well, but the greens lag behind noticeably. Bright, juicy grass is unlikely to sprout on the screen. However, such a small color gamut is common to most modern monitors and there is nothing fatal about it.

Color temperature is a little cool, around 7000K, but very stable. You can note the presence of a slight lilac tint, which can be seen in the CIE chart.

Movie Mode, totally lives up to its name, perfect for watching TV shows and movie epics. But do not forget that with such a high gamma value โ€“ 2.4, you need to darken the room properly for comfortable viewing.

The TV mode offers the user a mix of cinema and everyday pictures, namely a dark, contrasty image with a gamut of about 2.3-2.4 and a cool color temperature of 8500K. However, in the shadows, the color temperature is slightly higher and reaches 8000K. As in Film mode, there is a slight extraneous tint. In our opinion, this mode will often be needed if the user likes cool colors. I would recommend another mode for watching TV, Film, as it has a more correct color reproduction.

Game is actually a clone of TV mode. It offers a very cool color temperature, which is great for modern computer games. In addition, according to medical experts, cold tones at the computer make your eyes less tired, which can be extremely useful for gamers, especially young ones.

Presentation โ€“ measurements of this mode surprised me a lot. Usually in this mode, the accuracy of color rendering is sacrificed in sacrifice to the readability of text or images. But this is not the case with the Vivitek H1060. Fairly correct gamma 2.24, the best dE color gamut, no extraneous colors and a stable, though cool 7500K color temperature. What else do you need for a perfect picture? S-shaped gamma curves are commonly used for presentations to increase contrast in the midtones. By the way, there are no S-curves in any of the preset profiles of Vivitek H1060. What it says? That a projector is primarily intended for entertainment, not business presentations.

Bright โ€“ since this mode is specifically tuned to work with ambient light, it uses a lighter gamma โ€“ 1.83, allowing you to keep the content readable in daylight. Vivitek did away with the S gamma curves in this profile as well. Nevertheless the Bright mode performs its main function quite well โ€“ even with the light turned on the details in the dark areas of the image are quite distinguishable. This mode has a warm color temperature of 5800K with minor off color shades of green. But such collisions will not be prominent on the screen, since color rendering in daylight conditions is not the most important parameter.

sRGB is a profile that emulates the color space used in computers. In general this succeeds, gamma and color temperature are very close to the reference values 2.2 and 6500K. If you are going to process photos or connect a computer to the projector this mode is perfect.

Custom โ€“ a copy of sRGB with the ability to fine tune the settings in the projector menu.

Findings

So, the main disadvantage of the projector in terms of color rendering is not the greatest color gamut. But the values of other parameters are on a very decent level: color temperature is stable, gamma values, gamma curves graphs are not worse than those of more expensive models. The projector perfectly manages to level out obvious artefacts and flaws in color reproduction.

Though there are not so many factory presets, and some of them, in fact, duplicate each other, the user will find the most suitable variant. What you usually want? Cinema mode, true-color mode, and ambient-light mode. The Vivitek H1060 has all of these settings and if you need anything in particular, built-in tools help you quickly recalibrate the system for your new tasks.

No stratification of the gamma curves, stable color temperature, no strong extraneous colors.

Low color gamut, most factory profiles are characterized by cool color temperatures.
