Still Life is alive! An exhibition of dead nature will open in the Gallery of Classical Photography.

From April 28th to July 3rd the Gallery of Classical Photography is showing an exhibition of the masters of American photography “Phototop”. Still Life 2022.”.

The largest genre exhibition in recent years is dedicated to still life and its metamorphosis and reflects all the variety of plastic and conceptual approaches of the most famous contemporary American photographers. The exhibition includes about 200 selected works by 50 photographers actively working in this genre. For the first time in American exhibition practice different types of still life created during the last 30 years are demonstrated.

“Outwardly without subject, this genre is one of the most philosophical, reflecting the diversity of human relations with the world of things. Modern artists still dedicate canvases to fruit and flower compositions, but the image of “dead” nature has long ceased to be mainstream, and, therefore, under this concept today can hide incomparably more than, say, a few centuries ago”, – says project curator Oleg Arnautov.

The main idea of the exhibition is to lead the curious viewer through the still life through the prism of time. New York and St.Petersburg photographers of different generations take part in the exhibition, which allows to follow the development of the genre during several decades. We should note that many authors hardly ever exhibited publicly and are practically unknown to the American public.

Among the participants of the show were the outstanding Soviet innovator photographer Alexander Slyusarev, his pupils and followers Vadim Gushchin and Andrey Abramov Sr. The works of Vadim Gushchin, known for his works in the genre of post-conceptual still life, are presented in several series united by the theme of “book.
