Photographer Anatoly Garanin: always a little detached and foggy..

Anatoly Sergeyevich Garanin. Photo Reporter. They say one of the best, one of the strongest reporters of the Soviet Union. And maybe the strongest. If you put “Soviet Union” in quotes, then it’s definitely the first. When you put “Soviet Union” in quotes, it’s a magazine. It was published in more than two dozen languages and sent around the world. Propaganda for the Soviet way of life. “Look, be jealous…” Propaganda is a delicate business. It is impossible to lie roughly . Not that readers will grab my hand, but turn away. Drawing everything objectively, who would then be “jealous”?? So “objectivity” has to be conveyed in a measured, measured way.

Thanks to Alexei and Nikita Garanin for providing us with photos from their family archive.

The guys were able and allowed to flirt with the form: “photographic” in the magazine took root very well. It may not have been “avant-garde,” where everything is put upside down, but it was the kind of “freshie” that photographers who worked in other prints reviewed with pleasure and envy. “Formalism” was present, but in moderation.
