Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 compact digital camera review

One of the most interesting novelties for experienced photographers and photography enthusiasts is built on a standard “compact” base with a small sensor and, therefore, knowingly yields to experimental devices like Sony RX100 or Canon G1 X in terms of image quality. Wins off its unique array of other features, especially its superb aperture optics.

The LX7 Lens, like most of its competitors, has a limited focal range in this case 24-90mm but instead offers excellent optical quality. Special praise for the special nano-coating that suppresses over-reflections and stray light in the optical system. But it’s the aperture that’s more interesting: the minimum aperture at wide angle is f/1.4, rising to f/2.3 at long focus. In terms of nominal values it is the fastest lens of all the modern compacts in practice you should take into account the size of the sensor and it will change the position .

Large by the compact standards of format 1/1.7 inch sensor provides excellent photo quality and can operate at sensitivities up to 6400 ISO plus 12 800 ISO in enhanced mode . In place and the expected speeds: 11 fps in continuous shooting with active tracking autofocus, 5 fps and 1080@60p video recording at maximum quality or up to 120 fps at 1280×720 pixels.

Separate praise should be given to the camera’s exceptionally intuitive controls: a feature many photographers praised even in the popular previous-generation LX cameras. However, the pleasure of work is guaranteed not only for experienced and skillful professionals – for a beginner the creators preserved the effective “smart” automatics, capable of fully exploiting the potential of the camera without special participation of the user.

Together the features of the device give an exceptionally nice and functional “professional” compact camera. An excellent choice both for a pro – as an additional, pocket-sized model, and for a beginner – “to grow up”. Among the nearest competitors like Fujifilm XF1, Canon S110, Samsung EX2F or Nikon P310, the new Lumix LX7 is probably the best “professional” compact. And it certainly has the coolest lens to date. But it must be borne in mind that the quality will be well worth the price. And it would not be out of place to also consider the alternatives. Sony RX100 beats the LX7 in terms of picture quality and comparable size. Agree to lose in compactness, moving to a class of mirror-less “system” cameras – and get an even greater increase in quality, perhaps for the same or a comparable price.
