New Canon cameras and lenses may get a fingerprint sensor

Fingerprint sensors have long been used in smartphones, acting as a security system. A new Canon patent shows that the company is working to embed similar sensors in camera and lens housings.

Sensors will not only be able to block unwanted access to the camera, but will also create multiple access profiles for trusted users if more than one person is using the camera.

Fingerprint sensors on the camera and lens can also be used as additional function buttons, allowing different fingers to control autofocus, image stabilization and other settings. So a single sensor will allow at least 10 different functions to be programmed

The idea, so standard and even obsolete on smartphones, seems new and interesting for cameras. It is hoped that this will be one of those patents that finds application in actual Canon products.
