In a Nikon lens: to Kunashir island with Ivan Dementievsky

Nikon and My Planet present a dizzying new project. Ten famous American photographers set off in search of the most breathtaking views of America. Ivan Dementievsky – photographer, traveler, journalist. I was born in Nepal, worked in a bank for a long time, but once I decided to change my life radically and become a travel photographer. Together with Ivan we’re going to Kunashir to take pictures of an important landmark of these places – Pillar Cape.

Nikon

-Ivan, why did you choose Pillar Cape for our trip with Nikon??

– Cape Columnar – the lava from Mendeleev Volcano in the form of amazing polyhedrons. When you look at them, they seem to be man-made – so flat and smooth surfaces.

-You have a rather unusual background, how did you decide to become a photographer??

– I think you have to do what you like. It’s impossible to do a job you love badly. Even if it looks like jungle travel is uncomfortable. But if this is what your heart desires, then you have to travel through the jungle.

-This seems to be the thinking of half of humanity. Every other traveler and photographer these days.

– Yes, everything is already taken. Thousands of photographers have been to all the places. But what can I do, I like my job, I like to press the button and then develop the picture on the computer. I like to communicate with nature through the lens. Thanks to my Nikon camera I ended up in this unique place, an experience that will last a lifetime.

What’s the point? To have fun. If you want to take photos, you must take them. And not to think that everything is already filmed. All the more, nature always shows different pictures. If you shoot this cape every day, it will be different every day.

Photo equipment

-What kind of gear would you recommend to take with you when you travel??

– I always carry two cameras with me. If something happens to one, there’s always another. And in general, technology is on the verge of fantasy these days. I remember how it was when I was shooting with a film camera. It’s so much easier these days. For example, I’m shooting with Nikon 750 camera, it has a screen – you can shoot from the floor or raise camera above your head and control shooting anyway.
