I shoot with Olympus. Sophie Chernykh: With the OM-D E-M1 it’s just a bit more filmic, even more alive

Lately, I’ve decided to give myself a break from conceptual storytelling and family portraits, and even fashion photography has been more fun. We all change, and the rhythm changes. Now more inspiration is caught in real and live emotion. And it’s particularly good with the OM-D E-M1. It used to take a lot of time to process photos. You’re always trying to find the right color, but you can’t catch it in space. I was especially drawn to film colors. It’s gotten easier now, t. k. The OM-D E-M1 has built-in color profiles, the image is at once a little filmy and even more vivid. There is no “digital gray”.

When I first held this camera in my hands I felt a little bit of dissonance. The camera was too small and lightweight for me – we’re all used to bulky DSLRs. You could feel the power of the camera and have a great sense of grandeur. So at first it was unusual for me to take portraits with the OM-D E-M1. But with time, you realize how convenient it is!

My bag has just become several times lighter, so I can take all my lenses and enjoy each and every one of them when I’m shooting. Secondly, the uncomfortable feeling of being outdoors is gone. Now they see me as a tourist and don’t pay attention to my camera, so I can take very interesting portraits of onlookers in the streets on my trips. And thirdly, it’s become a lot easier to shoot in “live view” mode.

It’s the only way I ever shoot, I can comfortably see the frame with both eyes, it’s more compositionally correct, and you almost have the picture ready. Here I can’t help but stop and write about the touch screen of the OM-D E-M1. Now when you take a picture and adjust the autofocus you just need to touch the subject on the screen and the picture will be taken. The first time I saw it in action I was enthralled.

Separately, I would like to touch on the subject of lenses. Fell in love with the wide angle – the 17mm 1.8 lens is terrific for reportage moments when you need to capture dynamic shots.

I’ve never been much of a fan of “televisions”, the visual and aural contact with the models during the shoot is very important.

But the 75 1.8 lens changed my perception of long distances. It’s not as far away as the familiar 200mm, but it still lets you shoot far enough away. I especially like the depth of field and the volume!

Since I travel a lot and shoot in deserts, near water, rain and snow, I am glad that my camera is protected from natural elements. And it’s also nice to have all the interesting features that have been so beloved in photography lately in the OM-D E-M1. Multiple exposures, the ability to change formats, adapting to film in-camera, and much more make the Olympus OM-D E-M1 a unique camera that will give the world many masterpieces.

As a reader, I’m curious to know how the OM-D E-M1 by Olympus enhances the “filmic” quality in photography. Could you elaborate on what specific features or settings contribute to a more alive and cinematic feel in the captured images?
