How to make a Justin-Clamp from Manfrotto with your own hands

Justin-Clamp was created by Bogen/Manfrotto employee Justin Staley. With its wide functionality, it has become one of the basic accessories that can be found in the arsenal of most photographers. Its only drawback is the $56 price tag. However, photographer Joe Edelman suggested a DIY version of this clamp that would cost significantly less.

Photographic Equipment

Joe Edelman’s version of the clamp has a simple design and assembles in 10 minutes. To make it you will need:

1. Metal Husky 2″ spring clip or equivalent.

2. Oben BD-0 Mini Ball Head

3. A studio umbrella holder with a cold shoe

4. Cylindrical adapter with 1/4″- 3/8″ threads

5. Metal drill bit, several washers, screws and nuts.

Flashes

The process begins by drilling two holes in one of the jaws of the spring clip. Holes are drilled in the side of the jaws on one side and the other side, just above the spring. You then put a screw into one of the holes and screw the 1/4″-3/8″ adapter onto it. Another hole provides access for a screwdriver to tighten the screw. In the next step, holes are drilled on the clamp handles. A studio umbrella holder is inserted into one of these and tightened to the handle with a nut, with a pre-installed washer. In the other hole, a screw with a washer on is inserted, to which the Oben BD-0 ball head is attached.

Tripods

The finished clamp can be attached to a tripod and act as a studio umbrella holder or reflector. It can also be used to mount the flash and mounted on any flat surface, such as the edge of a table or the back of a chair. Ultimately, it’s a versatile tool that has many uses, allowing you to expand your shooting options and realize your creative vision.
