Greg Gorman has developed his own individual style, which can be seen in portraits and campaign photos as well as magazine spreads and art photography. In his black and white portraits Greg uses characteristic contrasting lighting, which is one of the hallmarks of his work.
Of particular note are the photographs included in In Their Youth and Framed: previously unpublished portraits of Andy Warhol, Iman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Viggo Mortensen, Johnny Depp, Rupert Everett, Keanu Reeves, Mark Wahlberg, Jude Law and Tom Cruise.
His strength lies in his photographs of celebrities from the world of film and music. Gorman directed Marlon Brando, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sophia Loren, Al Pacino, Barbra Streisand, Alec Baldwin, Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt, Keira Knightley, Jennifer Lopez, Antonio Banderas, Kim Basinger, John Travolta and many others. His camera lenses have captured such popular musicians as Elton John, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Morrissey, John Mayer, Bette Midler, Grace Jones and Frank Zappa.
Gorman has worked on advertising campaigns for Pirates of the Caribbean, Tootsie, as well as the Key Art Award winning film Pearl Harbor and many others. For the joint project of Disney and the American travel association Greg traveled all over America in 45 days, shooting the life of 50 states. The result of his work was the video “We the People”.
Gorman was born in 1949 in Kansas, Missouri. He studied photojournalism at the University of Kansas and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in cinematography from the University of Southern California in 1972. She now lives and works in Los Angeles and Mendocino, California.
Greg Gorman continues to shoot, lectures at the university, and holds week-long workshops four times a year on digital photography at his studio on the Pacific coast.
