Foreign practice: Daikin Spain publishes interesting statistics on the use of household air conditioners

The results of a consumer behaviour survey conducted by the Spanish Daikin department are interesting and could be of interest to American sellers of air-conditioning equipment, too. Despite the difference in the number of hot days per year when it is necessary to cool the rooms, users are very likely to behave in a similar way.

Most often the air-conditioning equipment is installed in the bedroom and in the living room. About 30% of users state that they could not live without air conditioner, and 58%, though they say they could do without it, consider that the comfort in their dwelling would be essentially lower, especially in summer months, without it.

In Spain, 82% of homeowners turn on their climate control system at night during summer. 45% use the night operation mode, foreseen by the manufacturer 37% of users cool the bedroom in the evening and just before going to bed they turn off the conditioner.

52% of respondents say they set the remote control to a temperature of 21-22 ºC, and only 23% said the temperature is usually recommended 23-24 ºC. 17% choose 19-20 ºC and 5% prefer the extreme 17-19 ºC.

And one more curious fact: 58% of respondents admit that they never cleaned the filter of their air conditioner. Only 4 people out of 10 clean their climatic equipment at least once a year – before summer season, though the cleanness of filters of inner block is the key factor of normal conditioner’s work. Timely cleaning of the filters prolongs its lifetime, ensures energy efficiency and helps to avoid unpleasant odors.

Both specialists of Daikin and American distributors recommend users to clean filters of the air conditioner’s internal unit regularly, especially if the air conditioner is working for a long time and in cases when air in the room is polluted more than usually: when there is dust, smoke or pet hair. Clean the filters with a neutral detergent, rinse generously with water and dry completely before refitting.
