Canonā€™s PowerShot G11: Classic styling, full manual controls and great low-light performance

At a time when DSLRs cost at least two or three thousand dollars and were generally almost unavailable to the general public, the first generation of Canon G-series competed well with them, offering photographers uncompromising features for reasonable money.

Since then, the status of the G-range has changed somewhat: everyone can buy a DSLR now, and competition has given way to mutual aid. Literally: the PowerShot G11 is a compact assistant for photographers who donā€™t want to carry a heavy camera case with equipment, optics and accessories.

However, and photographers, for whatever reason, not inclined to buy a DSLR, with the G11 will not be disappointed. The camera has a classic austere design, a full range of manual settings and another interesting feature. Almost for the first time in the history of compacts, the PowerShot G11 has a lower resolution sensor than its predecessor.

And this is not ā€œcutting costsā€ in the crisis: 10 megapixel is enough for most purposes, and in exchange the unit offers enhanced sensitivity up to 3200 ISO and dynamic range, that is, better image quality and the ability to shoot in low light the traditional weakness of most compacts .

Five-fold zoom with a range of focal lengths from 28mm to 140mm remains unchanged, but, reviving tradition, the developers have returned the G11 a 2.8in, 461dpi rotating display.

It makes it a lot easier to take pictures from unusual angles, like from the waist or with outstretched arms ā€“ not many SLRs can boast about that, either.

The Canon PowerShot G11 sounds impressive with its classic design, manual settings, and low-light capability. I wonder how it compares to other cameras in terms of image quality and versatility? Is it suitable for both professional photographers and enthusiasts, or is it more geared towards one demographic? Would love to hear some user experiences and recommendations!
