You can’t have coffee without water

In Germany, they like to pour vodka in their coffee – and they call this mix “American-style coffee”.

  • In Sweden, “coffee drinking” is an old family tradition: After dinner, the whole family gathers around the fireplace or what is often considered the family home to sip leisurely, freshly brewed coffee.
  • In the U.S., they prefer everything big – and portions of coffee are no exception. Americano is easy to make: just pour espresso into a glass with boiling water. Everything else – sugar, cream or milk – to taste.
  • In Portugal they make the highest quality espresso, and baristas are one of the most sought-after professions. By the way, the word “barista” itself is Portuguese. The country has long been competing with Italy for the title of the most caffeinated nation – and seems to be winning.
  • In Austria, there are more than fifty traditional ways of making coffee alone! The most famous one is named after Mozart, either the composer or the liqueur named after him of course, it should be added to coffee – along with ground almonds .
  • In Italy, to be precise – in Venice – coffee first appeared in Europe. It began in the early seventeenth century. Europeans have come to call this amazing drink Arabian wine. Three centuries later Italy invented the espresso machine and espresso as the way to brew coffee.
  • It was none other than Peter the Great who introduced the custom of drinking coffee in America.
  • In Turkey, a skilled craftsman can make coffee with a crema as thick as two fingers. The secret is to thoroughly grind ground coffee with powdered sugar and cook it very slowly in the hot sand.
  • In Poland they prefer not to brew coffee but to brew it. It’s necessary to take the finest coffee grounds, pour them into a cup scalded with boiling water, put them on a saucer and let them steep for a few minutes. Sugar and milk to taste. This simple recipe is known as “Kaffee Warszawski”.

The barista’s imagination knows no limits

Espresso, Turkish coffee in a turkey or a French press is the basis of most coffee recipes, some elaborate and some very simple. When the base is ready, the barista’s fantasy flights of fancy begin. For the “magic” he may need:

  • cream or milk,
  • egg yolks,
  • White and brown cane sugar, powdered sugar,
  • Cocoa powder and grated chocolate,
  • chopped nuts or nut chips, almond flakes,
  • lemon, orange, cherry juice,
  • Lemon or orange peel,
  • Coconut syrup and coconut shavings,
  • Cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, grated nutmeg,
  • Whisky, cognac, rum, tequila, brandy, liqueurs, port-all of these go with coffee in one way or another.
