Wexler ZEN 5 smartphone: Flagship features for not much money

The popularity of Google Android operating system and devices based on it is growing rapidly. The platform has already surpassed competitors globally and continues to gain momentum. Until recently worthy copies under the “robot” control were produced only by world-famous companies, but everything has changed. Low-cost processors MediaTek allowed small companies to produce smartphones with flagship features and high performance for small money. Today we will talk about one of these smartphones, the device Wexler.ZEN 5.

Smartphones

Previously the company Wexler hit the market of electronic readers – the gadgets based on electronic paper. When the market for these devices began to subside under the weight of a much more functional tablets, the developer switched to the production of inexpensive tablets. Appearance, ergonomics, design features

In a small white box in addition to the smartphone itself there is a basic kit, including a headset, cable and charger. It’s nice that the headset is not the classic penny earplugs, but something more meaningful.

Taking out the smartphone, along the way we note the minimal thickness, as well as the ubiquitous plastic. Almost all of the front panel is occupied by a five-inch display, covered by robust Corning glass – it will not be easy to scratch the surface, but we would not recommend experimenting. Fingerprints remain on the glass, but everyone should have gotten used to it a long time ago. No hardware buttons, all control is through a soft-backlit touchpad. In addition to the display on the front panel there is a spyhole 2-megapixel front camera, silver grille of the main speaker.

Wexler

Wexler front bezel.ZEN 5 is served by a thin metal plate. In any case it is nice that at least some metal decorations have found a place on the chassis.

On the top end of the smartphone is a 3.5-mm jack for headphones or headset, microUSB connector for charger. The power button and sleep mode button in the latest fashion has been moved to the right side edge. It is comfortable. On the left edge you can find the volume rocker.

The back panel is a removable glossy plastic plate with sloping edges, covering the inner compartment. Somewhere at the top there is a peephole of the main 13-megapixel camera with a miniature LED flash. Below – external speaker. Under the cover it is not easy to remove, it is very close to the main unit hides a removable battery, slots for two SIM cards one full-size and one micro-SIM , a slot for microSD cards.

Smartphones

Note that the device is quite good in the hands, although the back is very slippery. So much so that when you vibrate during an incoming call the gadget can easily move away from the table. Cleanliness lovers will also have to sweat a few times – the panel collects fingerprints no worse than the screen. The general ergonomics of Wexler.ZEN 5 is not questionable, all the buttons are easy to reach.

The feeling of a budget device does not strain much. The smartphone is well-assembled and has no creaking, the back cover does not bang or come off – all thanks to the clever latches and hidden connector, which you must pick up to remove the entire panel.

The operating system

Manufacturers love to modify Google Android, adding their own numerous add-ons, “improving” the interface, and so on. Fortunately, to Wexler.Zen 5 does not apply. In front of us is the classic Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Of add-ons – a package Wexler Play, a special selection of programs in the form of graphic recommendations. Initially, none of these programs are not installed. The user is prompted where to start. Chess, Yandex-maps, toys, V Kontakte app – all this can be installed in two clicks the first will send you to the App Store or not to install. In practice, Wexler Play noticeably saves time. Through the applet you can quickly install everything you need without wasting time searching.

Hardware features, display, in operation

The smartphone is based on a multimedia processor MediaTek MT6589T. This chip uses four processing cores, each clocked at 1.5 GHz automatically overclocked from 500 to 1500 MHz, depending on load , based on the ARM Cortex-A7 microarchitecture. PowerVR SGX 544MP with support for visual “chips” OpenGL ES 2 is responsible for the graphics.0 and DirectX 9.

Smartphones

The platform does an excellent job of handling the interface, launching programs, flipping desktops, Internet browsing, not the world’s most demanding video games. The smartphone doesn’t slow down, hesitate, or freeze until you’re running something extremely beautiful and graphically tricked out. For example, the gadget quite smoothly scrolls through full HD-video from YouTube thanks to hardware decoding acceleration, but slightly fails in front of, for example, Asphalt 8 or Dead Trigger 2. In justification, we can say that only the most expensive smartphones, the price tag of which exceeds 25000 Dollars, cope well with such complex titles.

Camera

As already mentioned, on the back of the Wexler.Zen 5 has a 13-megapixel peephole, and a dual-megapixel at the front. I don’t really feel like testing the second one, it’s just for blurry selfies and Skype calls at the most.

The main camera, in turn, is fast to start, fast to focus, fast to save the picture. Among the added features are auto bracketing for three frames, HDR, three-dimensional panorama, presets for portraits a little blurry skin and some others. It is strange that the developer left the interface of the smartphone untouched, but noticeably improved the application for taking pictures.

Wexler

Total

With active use, the smartphone battery is discharged during the daylight hours, which is quite good and very standard. In less strenuous scenarios, the device runs for almost two days.

Wexler

At a price of 11,000 Dollars, Wexler.Zen 5 has no equal. The smartphone gives flagship specs and pure Android. Everything works as it is claimed – the interface does not slow down, the camera allows you to shoot even in dark conditions. All things being equal, the device is even slightly ahead of some inexpensive counterparts in terms of build quality. We would recommend the novelty to everyone who wants to try the operating system in action.
