TV is still a vital piece of equipment in the living room

In April 2019, Sony conducted a study called “The Evolution of the Living Room,” and found out how much people spend in front of the TV screen on average, in what format they prefer to watch programs, and how the issue of fathers and children.

Screen time

36% of survey participants said they watch far less TV today than they did 10 years ago, but about the same number – 34% – acknowledged that their average weekly viewing rate has increased. Today, according to the survey, adults devote 9-15 hours per week to television.

Only 6% of respondents always watch TV programs and shows directly during broadcasting. About a third of respondents 35% find it much more convenient to use streaming services because they have to adjust their leisure time according to their schedule or the free time of their loved ones. Real-time viewing is only required for sporting events – 64% of viewers prefer to watch the outcome of the competition live.13% admitted that they never watch traditional TV.

Kids and TV

88% of respondents are worried that children spend too much time watching TV, which can affect their health or school performance. The younger generation devotes approximately 7 hours a week to television. Still, their parents admitted spending almost as much time in front of the screen as they did when they were kids – just over six hours.

At the same time, 67% of parents believe that the TV content consumed by their offspring has an educational function and only 10% disagree with this statement. But TV is not only about movies, TV shows and shows. 91% of children play video games and spend an average of nearly five hours a week doing so.

TV in the interior

With all the variety of devices for viewing audiovisual content, TV remains the first choice for 81% of viewers because it is more convenient and the picture and sound quality is higher. Only 8% have switched to a laptop and 4% to a tablet.

32% of respondents think TV is the most important thing in the living room 47% put the couch in the first place . Nearly half 48% would like to have a TV with a wider screen, and among men the share is 10% higher. Almost a quarter of the respondents – 24% – believe that the ideal screen diagonal is 49-55 inches, which is 1.2-1.3 meters.
