Toshiba unveils new line of image recognition processors

Toshiba Corporation has unveiled a new series of Visconti 3 devices from the Visconti family of image recognition processors. The first product in the new product line, the TMPV7528XBG, has several integrated processing cores, which significantly increases the range of possible industrial applications.

Toshiba Visconti 3 processors

Visconti series was initially created for the use in automatic tracking systems in automobile industry. Devices based on these processors are capable of recognizing lanes on the road, cars, pedestrians, traffic signals and many other environmental elements. Visconti 2 and Visconti 3 processors contain built-in image processing gas pedals, allowing them to detect pedestrians in real time with a high degree of reliability.

In addition, Visconti 3 chips should simplify software development, thanks to the built-in 2-core 32-bit ARM Cortex-A9 processor, whose main purpose is to support applications that work with the image recognition system.

With Visconti 3, Toshiba plans to expand its business in the field of image recognition and go from the development of automotive solutions to the creation of machine tracking systems for industrial applications. In fiscal year 2015, Viscontiā€™s projected sales of devices are expected to be 2 million. units. First shipments of Visconti 3 will begin in April.

Synopsis

Automotive safety and driver assistance systems continue to evolve globally. In the European Union, the European New Car Assessment Program Euro NCAP will be another incentive for early mass introduction. According to the program, starting from the next year all car manufacturers will be obliged to install automatic braking systems in their new models. At first, such devices will only have to react to other cars, but in 2016 the automatic pedestrian detection function will also become mandatory. Such initiatives are expected to help boost sales in the global image recognition processor market by 50-100% between fiscal 2010 and 2015. In terms of money, the growth will be 75 to 100 billion. yen.

Toshiba is an industry innovator. The corporation commercialized Viscontiā€™s first model in 2004 and introduced its improved version called Visconti 2 in 2011. The new Visconti 3 processor features expanded functionality, enhanced performance and a wide range of software development capabilities.
