Toshiba Stor external drive review.E Basics: 2 TB for hoarders

Storage space is always in short supply. The photographic archive is growing exponentially, the working files are not getting any smaller, and there’s also the school year ahead – the heir will have new homework, presentations and a lot of other accompanying information. Can’t do without a new external drive, there is no other affordable way to store the home archive these days. Not my first hard drive at all. Both WD and ADATA are used for different purposes, to which I am already used to. I instinctively wanted variety and when I saw the Toshiba external drives in the store I settled on one of them. Why? The brand is well known, I associated only with the most positive emotions, renowned for its reliability. And when we speak about data that’s the most important thing. I bought the Toshiba Stor as a result.E Basics 2TB.

Toshiba, by the way, has been making storage systems for 40 years. And not only internal and external drives for computers, but also solutions for specialized systems like navigation, security or medical. More recommendations are needed?

What it looks like

At home I took the drive, manual and USB data cable out of the box. The package was easy to guess, you can’t expect much more. The drive itself is very solid and austere, its external appearance alone inspires confidence in its reliability and longevity. The case is tightly assembled and resembles a monolith.

No creaks, no gaps at all. Rough plastic coating does not collect dust and fingerprints, it does not tend to slip from your hands. I want to keep it on my desk next to my computer, as a necessary addition to the notebook. Even has tiny rubber feet on the bottom side of the body that almost totally dampens vibration.

It is compact and not heavy. It fits in your pocket or in your bag on the way to work or on the road. Heavy Duty Stor.E Basics doesn’t get any bigger and it doesn’t take any extra space.

Performance and testing

Hidden safely inside this case is a 2.5″ hard drive. It is formatted in NTFS, but nothing prevents changing the format to FAT 32 or any other. On the disk I found another manual, in electronic form. Works Stor.E Basics is surprisingly quiet. I must admit that when I saw the rubberized feet on the chassis I thought the drive would vibrate like in the old days. No, the device does not make more noise than any other modern external drive, I did not feel any vibration either.

Feet on Toshiba Stor.E Basics

With a short time of use Stor.E Basics doesn’t get warm at all. It was not until one day when the drive was plugged into the computer all day that I noticed a temperature increase on the upper surface of the case, close to the edge where the cable jack is located.

Connects to the Toshiba Stor.E Basics via USB 3.0. Through the same, the power supply is realized. The technology is really impressive – data transfer rate is quite solid. The CrystalDiskMark test showed that during sequential data transfer the disk “reads” 113 MB per second, and “writes” only a little slower – about 112 MB/sec. Good to know – usually the “up” and “down” numbers are seldom close in value. You can safely connect to the USB 2 port.0, but remember, that the data transfer speed in this case, of course, will fall, and quite significantly.

USB 3.0 on Toshiba Stor.E Basics

“As native” met the Toshiba Stor.E Basics and TV. The drive was plugged into a USB 2 port.0, recognized as External Storage. I tried to watch a video stored on the disc – no jerks or delays. The drive passed the Full HD video streaming without any problems.

Disadvantages

Perhaps the only drawback to the Toshiba Stor.E Basics is probably the only drawback that the Toshiba Stor E Basics lacks specialized backup software. Such software is not useless and periodical backups are very useful. It would be very convenient if the software would periodically offer to reset the backup to the disk.

Conclusion

In general, Toshiba Stor.E Basics turned out to be a very good buy. The design is universal and timeless classic. Compact enough to carry on you and wear on you , the Toshiba! It’s easy to carry, easy to use, plug-and-play, and fast. I am very happy with the capacity. 2TB – very respectable capacity, enough for a year “stock” of photos, and work files, and heavy entertainment like movies and music. It’s worth mentioning the price – not much cheaper than 4000 Dollars. Per gigabyte” was a great result!
