The test of vertical vacuum cleaners: the firm does not knit brooms

And if it knits, then the branded! Therefore, in the range of vacuum cleaners very many manufacturers have vertical vacuum cleaners – helpers for quick cleaning. “Vertical”, “electric vacuum” – what else do ordinary people call them?! But as we saw, they’re capable of pretty good cleaning – and not just crumbs.

Vertical Vacuum Cleaner

Types of batteries in upright vacuum cleaners:

Sodium metal hydride NiMh in a Hoover vacuum cleaner, takes a long time to charge – 16 hours!

Lithium-ion LiIon in models Electrolux and Samsung, charge quickly – 4 hours. However, we should take into account that not all versions of an upright vacuum cleaner Electrolux Ergo Rapido exactly LiIon battery, only in the modification Ergo Rapido Plus, as in our test, and these models are more expensive. The rest of the Ergo Rapido has NiMh batteries and the vacuums take up to 16 hours to charge.

What do we mean by the phrase “upright vacuum cleaner”??

We will speak about light and small-sized models that are created just for express cleaning and should not perform the duties of a complete vacuum cleaner. The purpose of “vertical” – quickly remove something scattered: tea, washing powder, grits, soil from the pot with a flower – as well as maintain cleanliness in the house. If you find 5-10 minutes daily to pass such a vacuum cleaner on the most quickly polluted areas, then you have less need to resort to the basic vacuum cleaner and mop.

The big disadvantage of vertical vacuum cleaners usually consider their inability to vacuum deep under the furniture: does not give the design, they just do not fit there. But still we should understand that the purpose of vertical vacuum cleaner is different: to quickly clean open spaces to maintain cleanliness in general. And with corners and deposits under the beds you will sort out once a week with a more thorough cleaning. But we assure you that with regular use of the “upright” these piles will be less!

Test participants

Participants of the test

Electrolux Ergo Rapido Plus 2 in 1 ZB2943 – 6990 Dollars.

Hoover Athen ATN300B 011 – 9990 Dollars.

Samsung SS7555 Slone – 6990 Dollars.

Sinbo SVC 3463 – 1890 Dollars.

With or without cord?

There are these and others. In our test one model powered from the network Sinbo and the other three – battery-powered, needing to recharge, but then working independently, without wires. The pluses of battery models are obvious: no cords get in the way and do not restrict movement, the vacuum cleaner can be put in the hallway, on the porch or stairs – where there are no outlets. And a removable handheld vacuum cleaner without a cord can vacuum the interior of the car.

Table 1. Points

Handheld vacuum cleaner: small but far away

In our test, 3 models out of 4 except Hoover have a removable handheld vacuum cleaner for cleaning crumbs from the table, small dirt from furniture, window sills, clothing, car seats. The use is obvious, but it is not necessary to wait for the “kid” records. It’s effective when you need to remove a small amount of debris or a large amount of debris from a small area, like the seat of a chair. The thing is that the surface area of the working surfaces of the nozzles in these vacuum cleaners is very small, and for a large sofa or set it is better to use a full-sized vacuum cleaner with a nozzle for furniture.

2 handhelds, Electrolux and Samsung, are battery-powered, which means you can take them in the car and vacuum the seats. It is necessary to consider that time of independent work at Electrolux only 10 minutes, that is can and will not be enough for all salon! But Samsung works without recharging almost half an hour – enough both for the interior, and the mats.

The model from Sinbo has a portable vacuum cleaner, but it works from the network, and the length of the wire – 5 m. Consequently, vacuum the interior of the car with it can only be in a garage or cottage with an extension cord. But it’s always ready to go!

The Hoover model does not provide a portable vacuum cleaner, which is not very reasonable, given the fact that it is the most expensive model among those tested. And even its leading positions in some parameters of the test do not remove the question: why not??

Small nozzles for a portable vacuum cleaner are available from Electrolux and Samsung, but a detachable Sinbo handheld vacuum cleaner can be used with the main nozzle, and that is its advantage: it increases the area to be cleaned in one pass.

A upright vacuum cleaner

“At attention

All models of the test, except Electrolux, stand perfectly well without a support: in the pauses during cleaning they can be put anywhere, and they will not fall. And Electrolux needs a support: it can be leaned against the table, a tabletop or a shelf at a suitable height. On the back of the handle of this model has a special rubberized coating with projections, it helps the vacuum cleaner not to fall.

Dimensions and weight

The lightest and most compact vacuum cleaner of the tested – Sinbo, followed by almost the same Electrolux and Samsung, the tallest and heaviest vacuum cleaner – Hoover. You have to get used to using it: you should not strain your hand in any way, you just need to put it down and let the vacuum cleaner as if to guide you. At first it was hard to control it, but when we realized our mistake, things got better!

“Gone to Base”

Charging base is Electrolux and Samsung, it requires space, and the vacuum cleaner must be stored on it. Interestingly, the base of the Electrolux model can be mounted on the wall, and it takes up little space. But Hoover vacuum cleaner is charged in the same way as a cell phone – through an adapter, it has no base, which is even more convenient.

Basic nozzle

Main nozzle

Three models – Hoover, Electrolux and Samsung – have turbo brush rollers built into the main nozzle. They rotate and wrap wool, hair and threads around themselves. In all three cases, the rollers can be easily removed and cleaned, but the most clever cleaning option on Electrolux: you need to press the button on the nozzle with your foot, while the winding wool will be crushed by the retractable blade and immediately sucked into the dust canister. In the same three models the main nozzles can rotate around their axis the Electrolux has the largest angle , which gives them maneuverability. Note that the largest area of the working surface of the main nozzle in the model Hoover, it also has the tightest contact of the nozzle to the floor, which gives excellent cleaning results. And the smallest area of a working surface of the basic nozzle at Sinbo.

Switching speeds

Power is adjustable for Electrolux 2 modes and Hoover 3 modes , while Samsung and Sinbo have only one speed. In our test we did not find that this is a significant indicator for an upright vacuum cleaner: express cleaning is usually done on the only or the highest power. Low power mode is not really necessary for Electrolux – cordless vacuum cleaners have weaker suction power than full-sized vacuum cleaners, anyway.

Filters and dust collectors

Absolutely all models have washable filters and are designed for the lifetime of the vacuum cleaner, that is, in fact, models do not require any consumables. The most convenient filter cleaning system has Electrolux, the least elaborate and successful filter Sinbo.

As tested

We used all models about equally often for two months to make a general impression, to identify all the advantages and disadvantages. But the control test for the quality of cleaning was called the “control track”. We prepared a big bowl of garbage – the kind that housewives encounter in the kitchen and which sometimes needs to be cleaned quickly: a mixture of ground coffee, buckwheat, tea. The mixture was made into 4 identical “tracks”, placing them side by side, and making 1 pass in one direction and 1 pass in the other on each of them.

Each cordless vacuum cleaner we tested for battery life and charging. And if they all charge as much as the manufacturer claims, then they do not work as long without recharging as promised.

We measured the noise level with a special device, a noise meter, in normal conditions with a background noise level of about 35 dB.

The results are described in the test for each model: read on and you will find out.

How we scored

Some parameters we evaluated on a 10-point scale. The maximum score – 10, it was taken as a basis, and if there was something to reduce the score – reduced by 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 points.

Already after testing we derived an overall score for ergonomics see. Table 1 , it was taken into account in the sum of points and added 10 points each to models Electrolux and Samsung for a cordless handheld vacuum cleaner and 8 points Sinbo for a corded handheld vacuum cleaner. So, the Hoover model has lost additional points, just as Sinbo did not get points for wireless.

Table 2

Table 2. The results of measurements

Total

See Table 1 for overall score sum of points . In general, it reflects that Electrolux and Samsung models are the most elaborate and convenient, they went the whole test “nosepiece”, but on the total score the more modest Samsung even came forward, having surpassed the competitor by one of the main parameters – wireless operation time. The leader of the test in separate nominations, the model Hoover, takes the 3rd place on points only because of the lack of a portable vacuum cleaner. Fourth place on the total amount of points takes model Sinbo, but frankly – tongue is not rotated to call this vacuum cleaner outsider, because it is very worthy struggled with formidable and VERY 3-4 times more expensive rivals, and the quality of cleaning even won Electrolux and Samsung!

Thank you for the provided test equipment AND. Lonshakov Hoover , Z. Yakovlev Sinbo , V. Novoselskaya Electrolux , I. Rozhkov Samsung .
