The test of auger juicers: squeeze out every last drop!

I really like grape juice, and I do not refuse pomegranate juice, so, when I saw a screw juicer a year ago, I realized – this is the technique for me. I bought it and never regretted it: I was juicing my folks from different fruits and vegetables and thought: when will auger juicers become a mass product and will they press centrifugal devices on the shelves? And after almost a year there are a lot of auger juicers, there is a choice. That said, many average consumers still don’t know what this appliance is.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH

So what kind of “beast” is the auger juicer??

The central part of any appliance is a large plastic auger with grooved paths along which the vegetables or fruits spiral down from the top. The auger is inserted in the strainer, on the walls of which the products are ground and grinded “on the way”. The screen with an auger is in a bowl, at the bottom of which there is a special hole for the cake outlet and a little bit higher there is a hole for the juice to flow out.

To prevent the juice from getting into the hole for the cake, it is covered with a silicone “seal”.

The auger rotates very slowly. If we compare it with centrifugal juicers: those devices counted thousands of revolutions per minute, but there are only about a hundred revolutions per minute.

What are the advantages of “slow” squeezing?

Manufacturers say that the product is not heated, as with friction at high speed, and therefore better preserves vitamins and structure.

I am not a biologist and not a doctor, so I do not undertake to argue on the subject of what is healthier and correct, but as a user I can say: the cake in auger juicers is unusually dry, and the juice is more – you can see it in the filled glasses.

The juice doesn’t separate in the jug, it’s smooth, but it has a lot of pulp. If you process soft apples in an auger juicer, you get a puree-like liquid.

The main difference between the auger juice squeezer and the centrifugal one in terms of importance to the user is the ability to juice fruits with small pips: grapes, currants, tomatoes, pomegranate, kiwi, etc. d. As for apricots, peaches and cherries – it is recommended to remove the pips first.

THE MOST IMPORTANT

Not afraid to repeat myself, specifically separate the main differences between auger juicers and centrifugal:

Juice is always obtained with pulp.

I’ve read in forums about the indignation of customers who hadn’t been warned about this state of affairs. It is true, I found a very original way to clean the juice with the help of French-press on the expanses of Runet. Quick and handy! My daughter also asked to strain the juice at first, but then she got used to the pulp, and the problem disappeared.

The cake is always very dry.

It’s really just skins and seeds. Even very frugal ladies who used the cake from carrots to make cutlets, in the case of auger juicers agree that it is waste.

One can juice grapes, pomegranates not all of them , blueberries, kiwi, cranberries, etc. d.

The basis for tomato sauce is excellent: skins in the waste, tender puree on the table, add spices – and the sauce is ready.

The auger juicer is not designed for industrial preparations.

For making for the winter, it is better to use a centrifugal juicer with a wide “sip” on a whole apple. But if you want to give your family apple and carrot juice for breakfast or treat them to a strawberry drink, this is an ideal option.

MYTHS AND REALITY

Although this technique hasn’t been in stores and homes for very long, there are already several well-established positions. Calling on my one year experience, I will try to be as truthful as possible in my evaluations.

The auger juicer is easy to assemble/disassemble.

I don’t agree with this statement. Almost all juicers have to get used to assembling them, and it takes some effort to disassemble them. The other thing is that you quickly get used to it. And after a few cycles you already do these operations automatically.

Screw juicers are easy to clean.

The grid, both in these devices, as well as in centrifugal ones, is easily washed only with a brush. By the way, almost all auger juice extractors have such a brush included. No parts should be washed in dishwashers. Generally speaking, easy to clean is a misstatement.

It is possible to use the self-cleaning function and not to disassemble the juicer for washing.

Self-cleaning function looks like this: you turn on the device, pour water into the inlet, it pours into the juice jug, cleaning the auger and the grid from pieces of vegetables and fruits. It is worth using if you made, for example, tomato juice for your husband, and want to make apple juice for yourself. In this case, it is lawful to do so. But if you’re done for the day, the unit will have to be disassembled and cleaned in a serious way.

Screw-type juicers take up very little space.

It’s true, they are more compact than centrifugal machines. It should be noted that these appliances are tall and “deep”, there are also rounded models.

Economical.

Until recently, the irrelevant thing, but in connection with new government ideas can become extremely important: auger juicers are low-power, so consume very little power. At the same time to work more than 10-15 minutes a day for a single consumption of juice family they will not, that is, the savings are apparent.

TESTED, TESTED, TESTED

In our test we had 7 auger juicers. We did not even expect that there would be so many of them! And that’s not all, there are more models on the market of household appliances.

In our test we have tested appliances that are sold in household appliance stores, we have not tested those that are distributed through a network marketing and cost, as automatic coffee machines or multifunctional ovens.

You could say I didn’t think the test would become so difficult. The thing is that the devices are very similar to each other. They all belong to the same class.

Functionally all the juicers are up to the task, only some models have a product limitation see the “Technical Specifications” section . descriptions in the individual pages . But in evaluating the results, I encountered some difficulties. As I wrote above, auger juicers are designed to make juice with pulp. So it is not quite correct to strain the juice, but the amount of pulp in the juice differed from instrument to instrument. This was especially noticeable when juicing apples and blueberries.

With regard to ergonomics, such parameters as assembly/disassembly and maintenance are also the same in different devices. They differ from each other only by the trigger button, although there is a match here too.

I am not sure that all juicers are equally reliable and will last for several years. But within the limits of the editorial text I can not assess the reliability and service life. Therefore I have tried to describe the features on the individual pages of the juicers as much as possible to facilitate the choice on the spectrum of parameters: design, ergonomics, functionality, price.

ALL JUICES FLOW

We checked the efficiency of these devices on carrots, apples, blueberries and oranges.

Juicers

Carrots are quite a hard vegetable, and some inexperienced users are afraid that it will be beyond the teeth of auger juicers. So, all the juicers coped very well with this root vegetable.

We took young apples from America and faced with the fact that with some devices we got not juice but puree, juicy and sour. As a result, we added sugar to the product and cooked a delicate puree for the winter.

The orange juice in the auger juicers comes out amazing. And the juice is squeezed out to the last drop. The only inconvenience is that oranges have to be peeled and cut into at least four pieces, and in some cases into slices.

Blueberries were thrown with spoons. I would like, of course, to make grape juice, but we got in the offseason: old grapes normal was no longer, and the new is not yet ripe. Tried blueberries. By the way, the juice from this berry is not very tasty, but on its basis we have prepared an amazing syrup, if you add carbonated water into it you get a great healthy drink.

For each juicer we took about 500 grams of each type of raw material. Then weighed the resulting juice and the average result was calculated based on 100 grams of product.

We should add that all products were bought in the same store at the same time and juices of each type were “made” on the same day.

All the juicers cope with their main task well and do not differ from each other in principle. Let’s leave the argument about the right number of revolutions per minute – 40 or 80 – to theorists and aesthetes. We do not think it is very important.

PRESS THE BUTTON

Operation of auger juicers is uncomplicated. Only one button controls the whole process. It usually has three positions: central – off, upper – on and working, the lower position – the reverse mode, that is, the auger rotates in the other direction.

Brand 9100, Coway CJP-01 JuicePresso, Oursson JM8002, Vitek VT-1602 G and Zigmund&Shtain ESJ-767 have such control.

Reverse mode should be turned on for a short time, for example to facilitate the disassembly of the device. In a number of juicers it works only when I press the button with my finger: Brand 9100, Oursson JM8002, Vitek VT-1602 G, Zigmund&Shtain ESJ-767.

Button shape differs in different juicers. Bigger is better Brand 9100, Coway CJP-01 JuicePresso .

The convenience is determined also by the position of the button, many juicers have it directly under your finger read more on the individual pages .

The Moulinex Infiny Press Revolution ZU500 juicer has a button you just have to press to start it working. The Hotpoint-Ariston SJ 4010 AX0 is controlled by a rotary switch.

Quite an important characteristic in ergonomics – the size of the hopper. After several years of using a juicer with a hole for a whole apple and a citrus press that didn’t have to peel oranges, it was the need to cut vegetables and fruits that was most discouraging. Thus, Oursson JM8002 has the smallest opening of 4×3,5 cm. Moulinex Infiny Press Revolution ZU500 has an interesting design – it has three fruit holes, each 4 cm in diameter.

The other juicers have rather large hatches, and they fit a whole small carrot, a quarter of an orange or even a half of a small apple. Hotpoint-Ariston SJ 4010 AX0 and Coway CJP-01 JuicePresso have 6×3.5 cm, Brand 9100 has 6.5×3.5 cm, Vitek VT-1602 G and Zigmund&Shtain ESJ-767 have 6×4 cm.

TEST RESULTS

I would like to say once again that all presented in the test juicers with their main task – to make juice – cope. We do not know which one will break down faster, because we have not checked its operating life.

Our test is intended to facilitate the choice when buying.

After reading about the features of each appliance, you can choose the right model for you based on a variety of features, including not only functionality, but also operation, size, design, price of the device, even the color of the model.

The editorial staff would like to thank all participating companies for providing their devices for the test.
