The test multi-cutters – direct hit on the dinner table

Multi-cutters are compact devices, which can slice, shred and grate a variety of products. However, the devices themselves are very different – both in design and functionality. Let’s see what the three most popular multi-cutters can do.

WHAT THEY ARE – MULTI-CUTTERS?

Compact – and that’s the key! Unlike food processors, multi-cutters do not have chopping bowls and the power unit where the motor is located is much smaller than in combines. Multicutters feed the shredded food directly onto a plate or into a bowl – the same principle is used by meat grinders. Only instead of screws the multi-cutters have cutting nozzles. The three models in the test have completely different attachments: a rotating cutting disc with different inserts, like a regular combine Philips , rotating cutting cones Moulinex Fresh Express and cassette inserts that move back-and-forth Moulinex Fresh Express Cube&Stick .

The main thing that won us over at first sight is the nozzle storage system in the body of the appliance. They won’t get lost or take up space in your kitchen as is often the case with food processors and blenders. Although the appliances we tested are completely different in design, almost each offers a different, original concept of integrated storage for accessories. In the Moulinex Fresh Express Cube&Stick the accessories are stacked, in the Moulinex Fresh Express they are stacked inside a special “drum. In the Philips model, there is no storage system for attachments, and this did not allow the device to get the highest score in the test.

Cord storage systems also contribute to compactness and ergonomics: In both Moulinex models cord can be retracted right in the hood – just like in vacuum cleaners with automatic cord rewind. The Philips has a place to store the cord at the base of the case, and the cord length can be adjusted.

CARING

Dishwasher safe attachments and most detachable parts of multi-cutters except for Moulinex Fresh Express Cube&Stick lid , motor blocks – wipe down with a soft cloth. In the test room we have no dishwasher, so after work all nozzles had to be washed by hand, but it was absolutely easy: the remains of raw ingredients are perfectly washed away just under running water, for removing traces of boiled potatoes and sausages we used a dish brush.

Both Moulinex models have small waste collectors for the parts of the cut fruit that aren’t shredded. This way, the waste does not clog the nozzles and does not reduce the performance of the appliance, but from time to time the collector needs to be cleaned.

Moulinex Fresh Express Cube&Stick dicers clog most of all, which is quite understandable: after all we mostly cut boiled and soft food for olivies and vinaigrettes. But this model has a very handy brush to clean the nozzles.

SECURITY

You can hardly cut yourself with the discs Philips and cones Moulinex Fresh Express , but the blades of the slicing and dicing cassettes in the Moulinex Fresh Express Cube&Stick are very sharp and not covered – you have to be careful. Instruction manual warns of this: “Always hold the nozzle by the plastic part.”. No cuts during testing.

Only Philips model has safety lock to prevent accidental start. All models have protection from being switched on if not assembled correctly.

WHAT THEY CAN DO?

General talents

All models without exception can cut in slices rounds , some Philips – in slices of different thickness.

Coarse and fine grating sometimes manufacturers call it a shredder also belongs to the general skills of multi-cutters.

2 models – Moulinex Fresh Express Cube&Stick and Philips – can slice potatoes into bars to make fries though Philips’ bars are smaller and thinner than you’d like .

Individual control

Cutting salami or other sausage into thin slices is a “talent” unique to Philips. The same model perfectly slices julienne.

Cube cutting – only Moulinex Fresh Express Cube&Stick gives you this freedom. In addition, this is the only model that automatically adjusts the speed depending on the selected attachment.

The ultra-fine grater, used for nuts, parmesan and chocolate, is on the Moulinex Fresh Express model. It is also equipped with an attachment for slicing potatoes for potato dumplings.

CONTROL

In multi-cutters it’s elementary – “on”, “off”, “shredded”.”and “off.”There is no speed selection or pulse mode to bring the motor to its maximum speed. But we found some differences: Philips model has a rotary switch on/off which can be fixed and you don’t have to hold it unlike the buttons of Moulinex and Moulinex. The Moulinex multi-cutters work only when the button is held down, this can be tiresome when processing large amounts of food but on the other hand it allows you to be more responsive to the process and if necessary instantly turn off the device.

WHAT WE TESTED AND WHAT WE DIDN’T

It’s simple: we tested each attachment, evaluating the shape of the slicing or shredding and seeing if there was much waste. Originally we wanted to measure the speed of operation, but in the process of testing we abandoned this idea: all three devices work very fast, and we do not have bobsleigh for a fraction of a second to matter.

Since all 3 multicutters are very different, our task was to show their features, not to compare them to each other. That’s why we didn’t do a comparative test with the same tasks for each model. Why, for example, make one device “choke” on sausage, when the possibility of cutting it is claimed only in the other one??

MULTICUTTERS ON THE AmericaN MARKET

The construction of the tested appliances are the original developments of the manufacturing companies. But the market is not limited to that, although it is quite narrow. Most of the models shown here use the Moulinex Fresh Express multi-cutting machine as a design example more details in the test of this model . These are the models IRIT IR-5570 1340 Dollars. , Clatronic Multi Express ME 3484 1,650 Dollars. , Maxwell MW-1303 1,600 Dollars. , Great Rivers Sara-1 1500 Dollars. .

There is one more model in the Philips model line – HR1387, its functional difference from the tested by us HR1388 is in the absence of a disk for making french fries.

There is one more device, which is called on the market multi-cutter, – it’s Mystery MMC-1405 1000-1500 Dollars. , but it grates, shreds and slices in julienne and slices not directly into your crockery, but into its own built-in container.

We wish you the right choice!
