Dyson Supersonic changes the face of traditional hair dryers, and has a range of functions: it delivers a powerful, targeted flow of air, prevents hair damage due to overheating thanks to its intelligent temperature control system, and is lightweight and ergonomically designed for comfort.
James Dyson: âHair dryers, as we know them, are often very heavy, inefficient and noisy. They also disrupt the structure of the hair by overheating it. I gave the Dyson engineers a very challenging task: to dive deep into the science of hair and create technology that we think solves these problems.
The science of hair
Dyson invests ÂŁ50 million in the development of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Among other things, this investment went into the creation of our own hair research laboratory. Dyson engineers have spent years analysing the structure of hair, how it reacts to stress, developing an understanding of how to keep it looking healthy and well groomed, and learning the ins and outs of styling.
Over four years of development, the device has been tested on a wide range of hair types and with all known styling techniques on purpose-built equipment. More than 1600km of natural hair has been used in testing so far.
Next Generation Engine
The Dyson Supersonic hair dryer features the patented, digitally controlled Dyson V9 motor, which was developed by a team of 15 engineers specifically for this device. Itâs Dysonâs smallest, lightest and most innovative digitally controlled motor. Itâs up to eight times more powerful than other blow dryers, and it weighs half as much as other dryers.
Most existing hair dryers have motors in the head end of the device, which often leads to imbalance and consequent fatigue in the hand. Thanks to the compactness of the new motor, the engineers were able to place it in the handle, thereby significantly improving the balance of the device in the hand.
Protects the hairâs natural shine
Most hair dryers heat the air to extreme temperatures, which negatively affects the appearance and structure of the hair. The Dyson Supersonic continuously monitors and regulates the temperature of the airflow, taking 20 measurements per second to prevent overheating and hair damage.
Powerful and smart
Dyson Supersonic is equipped with the patented Dyson Air Multiplier⢠technology, which increases the power of air flow by 3 times. Traditional hair dryers often provide either weak airflow â theyâre slow â or, conversely, too strong, uncontrollable. The Dyson Supersonic creates a powerful, targeted stream at a 20° angle to dry and style your hair gently and thoroughly.
Acoustic engineering
Dyson aeroacoustic engineers worked to optimize the sound quality of the device when developing the new hairdryer. With 13 blades instead of the usual 11, Dyson engineers achieve a sound frequency which is not perceptible to the human ear.
Whatâs more, the compactness of the motor made it possible to fit it into the handle and surround it with additional elements of the soundproofing system. So the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer solves the problem of high noise levels without losing power to the device.
Modes and nozzles
Hair dryer Dyson Supersonic has four modes of heating air, three modes of flow power and cold air mode to fix the style. Also included are three patented magnetic hair extensions, which are easy to attach, do not overheat and allow for completely different styling.
â Designed by Dyson engineers, the Smoothing nozzle creates a directional flow for gentle hair drying and styling at the same time.
â The Dyson diffuser is designed to distribute the airflow evenly around each curl, reproducing the natural drying process. It allows to achieve perfectly textured style, solving the problem of tangled hair and extra volume.
â The nozzles do not overheat during use. Heat Shield technology separates the outgoing heat stream from the top layer of the nozzle with a layer of cool air, so its outer layer maintains a comfortable temperature.
â Each nozzle has a magnetic attachment and is easy to install and adjust.
