Tests have proven that nylon is the ideal material for dowel bars

Fastening to walls and other building structures is one of the oldest engineering tasks. As history has shown, the fixing material has to be strong, flexible, sufficiently flame retardant and lightweight in order to work comfortably with the installer. These requirements led to the development of the wood joinery in 1958. Arthur Fisher invented the world’s first plastic S-dowel made of nylon polyamide . For more than 50 years now, fischer, the world leader in innovative fixing solutions, has been producing wall plugs out of this material.

In May 2017. fischer has summarized the test results of the environmentally friendly polyamide RA6 dowel. Over 30 years, fasteners loaded with twice the permitted load have been tested.

The fastener has proven resistant to high loads over a long period of time. The material is mechanically tough and stiff, which provides tensile strength and a tight fit. The fasteners have the necessary load-carrying capacity in construction materials.

nylon dowel remained ductile at low temperatures and did not change dimensions at high temperatures -40°C to +80°C during thermal tests. Polyamide also shows excellent chemical resistance to weathering, ageing and corrosion.

In addition, the dowel has a good dampening ability – fasteners made of viscoplastic nylon absorb vibration and provide soundproofing, thus the mount does not transmit sound vibrations arising in the construction.

Polyamide is also a dielectric, which makes it ideal for fixing electrical systems and cladding electrical components.

In order to distinguish a nylon dowel from a polyethylene dowel a material that visually and tactilely resembles polyamide , it is enough to dip the dowels into a container with water – products made of nylon stay on the bottom, while products made of polyethylene float to the surface.

Nylon is considered the ideal material for dowel bars due to its high strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion and chemicals. It provides excellent support and load transfer between concrete slabs, preventing cracking and improving overall structural integrity. Other materials such as steel and plastic have been tested, but were found to be less suitable due to issues like corrosion, fatigue, and poor performance under heavy loads. Nylon stands out as the preferred material for dowel bars in concrete construction due to its superior properties and performance.
