Testing of a bookshelf speaker system 2.0 PSB Synchrony Two B

Article content

The Two B models represent the top line of the Canadian company PSB with the name Synchrony. The relative affordability of the PSB senior range isn’t surprising, because the company’s founder, musician and engineer Paul Barton, has long been renowned in the hi-fi industry as a “frugal maximizer. In addition to Two B, which is the ‘smallest’ model in the Synchrony range, the range also includes One B floorstander, One and Two floorstanders, two One C and Two C center speakers. The principle of ‘two by two’ is only broken by the Synchrony S Custom Rear Speaker.

CONSTRUCTION

The design of the Two B models would have done justice to the more expensive speakers. The front, back panel, and sides are beautifully curved, preventing standing waves in the cabinet. The speaker back and front is aluminium, with a sandwich front panel and central vibration-absorbing elastomeric layer. MDF is used for the sides, top and bottom of the cabinet and is finished in black ash or dark cherry real wood veneer. Metal panels and wood are screwless with special latches. In the recess on the top panel there are four universal terminals in clear plastic insulation and underneath is the reflex port socket. The terminals are suitable for large cross-section cables, acceptable for spade-type connectors and allow Bi-Wiring/Bi-Amping dual-cable connection.

The Synchrony Two B’s front fascia stands out with its custom driver interchange, with the midrange/high frequency driver on top of the squeaker. Improved tweeter features a neodymium magnet and ferrofluid cooled voice coil. 25mm diameter titanium driver dome recessed into acoustic lens with a large breakup plate that encloses the center region of the metal hemisphere.

The midrange/midrange driver has also been significantly upgraded for the Synchrony series. The Two B model midwoofer has 133mm diameter and its diaphragm is a composite: a woven base of natural material on the outside reinforced with a second layer of woven glass fiber yarn. The speaker motor uses a larger voice coil, a magnet system with flow-focusing rings and a center bullet made of aluminum that perfectly dissipates heat. Non-magnetic aluminum speaker cage has a well ventilated design. Rubber ring, placed between the cone holder and the cabinet, not only hides the screw fastening of the speaker, but also serves as an excellent protection against vibrations. In short, PSB engineers have taken many seemingly small and inexpensive steps that add up to a high quality loudspeaker. The speaker crossover circuitry used is Linquitz-Riley 4th order with the crossover point at 2.2kHz.

SOUND

Canadian half-speakers have a smooth, natural sound without unnecessary accents in any of the sub-bands. Well-defined treble, the details show not only the timbres of cymbals and other high-frequency tinsel, but also the loops, while the speakers avoid intrusive ringing, typical of other speakers, equipped with tweeters with metal dome. Nice medium frequencies captivate with a nice naturalness, vocal parts are reproduced with a decent articulation – there is neither too much expressiveness, nor coldness – I would like to call it “the golden mean”. The bass of the Synchrony Two B, as it often happens with compact bookshelves, is not very deep, but the rhythm of the music the speakers set well, give a sufficient amount of upper bass, some relief mid-bass. So whether it’s chamber music recordings, jazz or classic rock, the sound canadian has a decent bass foundation, the bass is just a little short of speed.

The Synchrony Two B music scene is not too vast, but very accurately constructed: the images are well localized in space, stable, the scene is evenly filled along the azimuth, and there are several “image” echelons in the depth. In general, it is not very difficult for Two B to seat chamber orchestra musicians correctly.

At a higher volume the Canadian still retains a commendable coherence of sound, but draws timbres a little rougher, has less control over the bass and allows some liberties in the tonal treatment of acoustic instruments. They especially do not like the high frequency density of sound in the MF/LF range, when several instruments have close basic timbres, then you can hear quite noticeable “interference” effects. So loud sound is better to choose for listening to electronic music and rock.

SUMMARY

PSB Synchrony Two B is a successful model of bookshelf acoustics with modern design, qualitative construction, but the main thing – with good, smooth sounding without special genre contradictions.
