Test headphones Sennheiser IE 80

Sennheiser IE 80 are the updated version of the legendary IE 8, and in fact they do not differ from it, except for a slightly modified look. One of the ā€œfeaturesā€ of both models is a hardware control of bass level in sound, realized in the form of a screw on the backside of each earphone.

It must be said that the Sennheiser IE 8 could well claim to be the most hotly debated in-ear headphones in the world. In their honor, on various forums of quality sound lovers, there were and still are active battles between those for whom these headphones represent almost the achieved sound ideal, and those for whom their sound seems, to put it mildly, not the best.

This love and hate for the Sennheiser IE 8, quite reasonably extends to the IE 80. Their main reasons are, of course, in the field of sound, although the ergonomics of the IE 8 and IE 80 is the subject of much discussion and debate.

Ergonomics

The headphones fit your ears ā€œupside downā€ ā€“ their wire is thrown over your earbud in the process. They donā€™t look too shallow and donā€™t make you feel uncomfortable, but because of the unusual shape of their bodies, some users have problems fixing the earphones in the ear canal. Fortunately, in most cases these problems can be solved by the selection of earpieces.

With the ā€œcutting offā€ of external noise Sennheiser IE 80 handle at a comparable level with Audio-Technica ATH-CKM1000.

The sound

Sennheiser IE 80 presents music in a soft, relaxed manner. They do not have the speed, clarity and abundance of nuances that are typical for armature headphones. All the music sounds in a somewhat simplified way, without ā€œunnecessaryā€ details. Much of the ā€œtextureā€ of each note played, the subtle nuances that accompany its sound, in Sennheiser IE 80 is smoothed and hides.

In addition to this, the headphones have problems with intelligibility ā€“ they are ā€œpassĆ©ā€ before fast heavy music, and compositions with a large number of simultaneously playing instruments.

Sennheiser IE 80 has a lot of bass, even with the minimum position of the volume control. The bass is not accurate and well-defined, but wavy, smeared. The headphones have a noticeable dip in the upper part of the midrange, which adds volume to the sound, but ā€œcutsā€ the naturalness.

Summarizing all of the above, the reasons why some listeners hate the Sennheiser IE 80 become obvious. What is the reason why other listeners love these headphones? Oddly enough, itā€™s all the same.

As in mathematics, minus on minus gives plus, so in Sennheiser IE 80 ā€“ the sum of minuses make up a very interesting, and unique in its kind picture.

Perhaps the main feature of these headphones is that you donā€™t want to analyze, decompose, look for strengths and weaknesses in their sound. It is perceived as a single, whole image, spectacular and beautiful.

One of the key features of this image is the scope and scale with which it is presented. From the first seconds of listening the listener literally feels in a huge hall, from all sides which music comes that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the musical material, literally dissolve in it and enjoy listening to forget about all the advantages and disadvantages of Sennheiser IE 80, and much more..
