Tablet ODEON TPC-10: fighters office front is dedicated

Back at the beginning of 2011 in the American market began selling a new compact tablet computer ODEON TPC-10. Since the device is mobile, which means it needs a mobile connection, the first major partner that sells the tablet in America is MTS. Let’s take a closer look at the hero of our review – tablet computer ODEON TPC-10. It is compact, lightweight and functional, but still inexpensive.

Angry citizens are looking for an answer to “apple” prices

From the time of the first laptops consumers have been familiar with the concept of the tablet computer. They’ve been prepared for this by designers and fiction writers alike. It would seem that everything is simple: a compact body plus a touch screen and you have already conquered a new market.

The reality was not so rosy. At times the compact and lightweight device turned out to be not so compact and lightweight, then its characteristics significantly fell short of the level expected by consumers, and if it reached that level, then the price literally took your breath away.

Fortunately, technological progress is inexorable in its development. A significant breakthrough in this direction was the notorious iPAD from Apple. Nevertheless, for all its merits, it is fundamentally unable to satisfy all potential consumers.

Someone was not satisfied with limited functionality associated, firstly, with a strict binding to a specific operating system iOS , and secondly, with a very strict policy of Apple in matters of distribution of software for their technique.

Finally, the limiting factor is the architecture: iPAD is built not on the x86-compatible processor most users and programmers are accustomed to, but on its own A4, based on the ARM core.

Not everybody is happy with the price policy: the thing is that Apple brand itself is very expensive, so products under it cannot be sold for cheap. This situation could not last indefinitely. And the market has spawned an “answer”.

The correct answer – tablet ODEON TPC-10

Back in early 2011 the American market began selling a new compact tablet computer ODEON TPC-10. Since the device is mobile, which means it needs a mobile connection, the first major partner that sells the tablet in America is MTS.

Short specs

One of the very interesting “features” that radically distinguishes ODEON TPC-10 from the Apple iPAD, is its openness.

Thanks to the ability to boot from USB which is the norm for desktops and laptops, but not common among more portable devices , this tablet can be run under any operating system that will agree to work on it.

And today there are at least four such systems: MS Windows, XP and above, various Linux distributions the best is the netbook edition , Google Android x86 and MeeGo.

So there’s plenty to choose from, and that’s a good thing. The basic delivery of the ODEON TPC-10 includes Windows 7 Home Premium.

Now a little about the “iron”. The computer is equipped with a capacitive touch screen with a diagonal of 10 inches with multitouch support.

Worth mentioning is the high quality of the display. The picture is very clear, bright, with excellent color reproduction, the response time is quite enough to cause no jerkiness while watching movies or playing games.

The dimensions of the computer itself are only slightly larger than the screen. That is, its front panel is practically a solid screen. Only on the side is a thin panel with three hardware buttons: Power, Home and Back.

All in all, this light and compact device feels in your hand more like an e-book than a mobile computer.

On top in the end face is a slot for a SIM-card. This, however, does not mean that every device is ready to accept it.

There are models with built-in 3G-modem and models without it. However, if you buy ODEON TPC-10 without a modem, it can always be installed in the company’s service center, the whole process takes a few minutes.

In general, this computer was surprisingly upgradeable. If you want you can increase the RAM or replace the SSD-drive, we’ve already mentioned the possibility of 3G modem installation. In general, a rare flexible and expandable thing.

Impressions

The undoubted advantage of the ODEON TPC-10 for “office frontline workers” is full hardware compatibility with the “big” computers.

And if so, the user gets to its disposal familiar MS Office and other painfully familiar programs – no need to retrain, or to engage in the painful selection of new programs for their purposes. The hardware features of the ODEON TPC-10 are more than enough for all office tasks.

Typing is one of the “profile” tasks of ODEON TPC-10, so let’s devote a few words to it.

The tablet, of course, is not equipped with a hardware keyboard, although, according to feedback from the first owners of the device, Bluetooth-keyboards work great with ODEON TPC-10.

As for the on-screen keyboard, the standard Windows 7 keyboard seems a bit too small. On the other hand, Microsoft does not sleep, and in the second quarter of 2011 came out Service Pack, which corrected this defect as well.

And those users who have not updated the operating system, can use third-party programs, the good news is that there are many of them again, the advantage of x86-compatibility ! .

Another feature that’s sure to pique the interest of potential buyers is the ability to watch HD-video. Let’s tell you right away – video up to and including 720p plays without the slightest problem.

Higher resolution is a burden for the processor: when watching 1080p video the picture jerks noticeably, and the detail of the picture is not so.

With games everything is a bit more complicated. If we are talking about relatively “light” games, and even more focused on the mouse control, it will not be a problem: the processor and memory are not pumped up, and to manage the game “poke” in the touch screen is quite comfortable. But it is unlikely that you can play a game of World of Warcraft on the road.

Synopsis at

On the whole, the impressions of the new tablet are very positive. Bribes a nice combination of real compactness and lightness with quite “adult” capabilities.

There are some rough edges, but, on the one hand, they can be attributed to the “children’s illnesses”, which are not very serious. On the other hand, the great flexibility inherent in ODEON TPC-10 makes you confident that most of them can be easily overcome.

In particular, the release of the final version of the operating system MeeGo from Intel will rethink this tablet, because the corporation specifically develops this OS for this class of device, which means that all the features and subtleties of the tablet computer based on the Intel Atom processor will be carefully analyzed and implemented.
