Stale Makeup: Can’t Keep, Must Throw Out

Decorative cosmetics don’t always lose their properties after the expiration date. However, conformity in appearance does not mean it is safe and suitable for use. The active ingredients and preservatives in the product gradually lose their effectiveness after the allotted period of use.

Lifespan of Beauty Products

Cosmetics in factory sealed packaging can be stored for up to 3 years. The expiration date is always indicated in the product label, and can often be found on the picture of the “jar with the lid open”. Contrary to popular belief, you can not check the expiration date by looking at the barcode – the numbers only indicate the country, company and product code.

Basic rules for storing cosmetics

To avoid premature deterioration of cosmetics, you must store them properly:

1. Store cosmetics in a dry, dark place at room temperature

2. Do not leave cosmetics in the bathroom to avoid humidity, as well as frequent changes in temperature

3. Do not keep lipstick, eye or lip pencils, or foundation out in the cold – low temperatures change their texture. As a result, the products do not adhere well to the skin, and it becomes uncomfortable to use them

4. Do not leave cosmetics in the sun, near heat sources such as radiators or incandescent lamps

5. Always keep the product tightly sealed. Tightly closed packaging is not only a danger of microbial development, but also accelerated oxidation processes, as well as changing the texture of the product itself.

What will happen if the storage conditions are not complied with?

Makeup can go bad prematurely if not stored properly. There are several indications which show that the process of deterioration has begun: the color, consistency and smell change, the texture becomes watery and heterogeneous, and a translucent yellowish oily layer appears on the surface. These products will be applied to the skin unevenly and look unaesthetic, and they may cause individual allergic reactions.

When to change a cosmetic

Makeup products like eye shadow and lipstick in extreme colors that you use infrequently and store appropriately should still be disposed of after the expiration date printed on the label. After opening the package, the contents must be used within a period of time, which depends on the type of product. Lipstick, for example, on average, after opening it is recommended to use about 9 months, powder – more than a year. It is better to change mascara every 4-5 months.

Please note that the manufacturer indicates the expiration date on the packaging, taking into account the individual composition of his product. In addition, experts recommend checking every six months to see which of your existing makeup products to keep and which to throw away. Especially if there are organic beauty products or those based on natural ingredients. Their life expectancy is noticeably shorter than with conventional cosmetics, which generally contain preservatives.
