Sennheiser Momentum headphone review: just get the Sennheiser.

The German company Sennheiser has the same status on the headphone market as Nokia had on the cell phone market in its golden years. Market share, sales levels and other economic indicators we do not have in mind now Although with them Senkhs all is well”, but we have rather the image, “signification of the brand and attitude to it of the main mass of users – as well as sellers, judges of various audio exhibitions and even specialized publications. From all these sources very often it happens to hear that Sennheiser is the No.1 headphone brand in the world. Against such statements there are a lot of counter-arguments, but in spite of it, the authority of Sennheiser remains unshaken.

Audio Engineering

We, on our part, can not fully agree that Sennheiser is the brand № 1, but at the same time we can not deny that Sennheiser is ahead of the whole planet according to its popularity and authority on the headphone market. And if the model range Sennheiser has a headset for Apple equipment, we couldn’t refuse to include it in our review. So, we present you our first participant – Sennheiser Momentum.

Design

The headset from Sennheiser – small and richly decorated. Only the earcups are made of plastic. The function of headband and cup-holders in Sennheiser Momentum is performed by one all-metal headband decorated with leather covers probably it’s very qualitative leatherette .

The Sennheiser Momentum cups move up and down on this headband – thus “adjusting” the headphones to the size of the user’s head. If you slide both cups to the very top, the Sennheiser Momentum design will take a compact and easy to carry in a small bag. However, unlike the other two participants of the review “Senhi” can not fold, and it will need a little more space in the bag.

Usability

In metallic-leather construction, the Sennheiser Momentum is a mere 190 grams of weight. The headphones are so light that you can get tired of their presence on your head, probably only if you wear them for ten hours without taking them off. In addition to the small weight the Sennheiser Momentum comfort is promoted by the small pressing power of the cups – which is enough for the headphones not to fly off during brisk movements.

But the small contact pressure of the cups has its own negative side – it is noise isolation. Despite the fact that Sennheiser Momentum has rather dense ear cushions, the level of isolation, which these earphones provide, is not so great as you would want it to be. Senkha” cope with cutting off street and ground transport noise pretty well, but to listen to music comfortably in the subway, you have to “increase” the volume on the player.

Remote and mic

Sennheiser Momentum remote control is equipped with three buttons: one is for receiving/rejecting calls and starting/stopping the music or video playback, and the other two – for volume control. The ergonomics of the remote control is satisfying – all the buttons are easily found in the blind, their travel is big enough and well tactile.

As to the microphone, there is, alas, much to complain about. It records speech quite well, but has too wide, in our opinion, the directionality, so along with the user’s voice, it actively gets ambient sounds, which can be inconvenient when using a microphone in a noisy environment.

Listening

It is normal for portable headphones to have more or less bass. Here and in the sound of Sennheiser Momentum its amount is slightly higher than normal. But we were expecting more bass in the Sennheiser, simply because there is more bass in the lion’s share of similar headsets. But more bass doesn’t make it better. It’s a matter of taste: some like it “bassier” and some “flatter”.

The sound of the Sennheiser Momentum just gravitates towards “flatness”, “honesty”, “neutrality”. We are sure that the small rise of bass in these headphones was intended by the developers as a means to combat external noise, which most actively overlaps the bass area.

Otherwise, the tonal balance of the Sennheiser Momentum is almost flat. The midrange has no perceptible problems at all, so voices and most live instruments sound very natural in the Senkha.

In the high frequencies the headphone amplitude has a peak – small and noncritical, but perceptible to the ear: because of it, hissing and whistling consonant sounds are sometimes played by the headphones harshly.

For headphones of the form-factor and price category Sennheiser Momentum has very fast and well-defined bass. Its speed characteristics are enough to reproduce heavy metal, or one of its indispensable components: fast bass drum parts. Only the headphones “pass” in front of the most impetuous of them – a little “blurred” by the individual beats.

In the midrange and treble Sennheiser Momentum also provide good resolving power – comparable to that of full-size headphones in a similar price category. In the high-frequency range you can hear a lot of quiet, insignificant details of phonograms, which have nothing to do with the music but audiophiles are happy with their presence .

The midrange area boasts good intelligibility and quite rich in nuanced timbres.
