Samsung will replace plastic packaging with one made of environmentally friendly materials

Samsung has announced that it will begin taking steps this year to replace plastic packaging with paper packaging and other environmentally friendly materials. Starting in the first half of 2019, the packaging in which Samsung products and accessories, from cell phones and tablets to home appliances, will be made of environmentally friendly materials such as recycled/bio-plastic and paper.

For this initiative, Samsung has formed a team of specialists responsible for design, development, procurement, marketing and quality control of innovative packaging ideas.

The company will replace the plastic elements in the packaging of cell phones, tablets and wearable devices with forms made of impregnated paper pulp, and accessory bags will be made of environmentally friendly materials. Samsung will also change the design of phone chargers, replacing glossy coating with matte and getting rid of plastic protective films.

In addition, the plastic bags used to protect the surfaces of appliances such as televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines, as well as kitchen appliances, will be replaced by bags made from recycled materials and bioplastics.e., made from plastic waste and non-fossil materials such as starch or sugarcane.

By 2020, Samsung will only use fiber materials certified by international environmental organizations such as the Forest Stewardship Council FSC , the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative for its packaging and booklets.

“Samsung Electronics is scaling up its work to address environmental issues such as natural resource depletion and plastic pollution,” said Gyeong-bin Jeon, head of Samsung’s Global Customer Satisfaction Center. – We are committed to recycling resources and minimising pollution associated with our products. We will use more environmentally friendly materials, even if it results in higher costs.”.

In line with its zero-waste policy, Samsung Electronics has set a medium-term plan to switch by next year to using only paper packaging materials certified as part of forestry initiatives. Between 2009 and 2030, the company intends to use a total of 500,000. tons of recycled plastic and collect 7.5 million tons of discarded products.
