Roskachevo presented the international rating of smartphones 2018

Roskachestvo together with ICRT International Consumer Research and Testing Ltd continued a large-scale examination of smartphones on the market in 2018 ā€“ 55 models of the most popular phone brands in America were added to the previous study. Based on the results of the tests, Roskachestvo presents an updated ranking of the most popular smartphones in 2018.

Phones and communications

New products on the smartphone market including Apple, Huawei, LG, HTC, Asus, Samsung, Sony Xperia and others were tested on 229 parameters of quality and security of mobile devices. The large-scale study covered several crucial categories: phone capabilities, ergonomics smartphone usability , camera and video, calling, text messaging, music, navigation and the Internet. These categories imply both general criteria power and multifunctionality, versatility and usability of the interface and more specific parameters: fingerprint scanner, water resistance, durability, speech quality in noisy environment and others.

Based on the results of the 2018 overall evaluations, Roskachestvo compiled the top 10 smartphones, with Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus models leading the way. The leading smartphones of the previous ranking Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus have shifted to lines 3 and 4, respectively. Next is iPhone 8 Plus, which is located one line above the new Huawei P20 Pro. The 7th place of the rating is occupied by the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, followed by the iPhone 8 8th place and iPhone X 9th place , and

Huawei Mate 10 Pro is at the bottom of the top 10. Thus, in the top 10 of all the smartphones studied are most of all brands Samsung 5 models, 4 of which are leaders , 3 models iPhone and 2 Huawei newcomers to the top 10 , and two models LG, which previously held 8th and 9th place, even dropped out of the ranking. In a new study, Samsung models were the best in such indicators as sound quality, battery capacity, memory capacity, quality of calls and water resistance.

Speaking of water resistance test: in order to find out whether the smartphone will be able to function properly after it gets into water, the experts immersed each device for 30 minutes in a water pipe 1 m deep. Then the smartphoneā€™s performance was evaluated in intervals: immediately after the test, after 2 days and after 3 days, respectively. The smartphones were also put to the ā€œrainā€ test: the phone was placed on the stand and a special device simulated rain drops falling on the smartphone. Thus, from the top 10 smartphones excellent indicators of water resistance distinguished Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 +, as well as the Galaxy Note 8.

Samsung models could not boast of leadership in terms of capturing quality photo and video : the top three places in this rating are occupied by Apple smartphones iPhone X in first place, iPhone 8 and Apple iPhone 8 Plus in second and third place, respectively . Much attention was paid to the evaluation of a smartphone in terms of its usability as a camera: the comfort of transferring information to a PC, the basic and advanced settings, the shutter speed, etc. were evaluated. d.

Picture quality was assessed by transferring the pictures to a computer and printing them on the same laser printer. Each smartphoneā€™s camera took photos at the highest possible high resolution, in JPEG format unless another format is provided . Shooting was carried out in automatic mode unless otherwise required by the conditions of a particular test , which, among other things, adjusted the parameters of exposure, white balance and focus. Interestingly, the overall ranking leaders Samsung S9 and S9 Plus in camera quality are ranked only 12th and 17th, while their counterparts Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are ranked 5th and 6th, respectively.

Top 10 smartphones according to test results

What Apple smartphones turned out to be vulnerable in was the durability test: to determine whether the phone can withstand powerful mechanical effects such as bumps or drops , experts conducted a special ā€œdrum testā€. Thus, the smartphones were placed in a metal drum tube, which makes 100 rotations so that the phone is exposed to shocks from different sides and survived falls from almost a meter height. The test took place in two stages: first, experts looked at how badly the phone was damaged after 50 spins, and then ran the drum for a second round and another 50 spins, respectively.

This test was devised to test two smartphone surfaces at once ā€“ the back and the front ā€“ for durability and resistance to shocks. Apple iPhone X could not boast of success at the end of these tests after 50 rotations of the tube the screen of this model broke ā€“ it appeared green stripes, and after 100 rotations ā€“ the back panel broke, and the display completely stopped working. And the smartphones that successfully passed this test were the Huawei P20 Pro and the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

One of the most interesting tests in its form is the battery test. For starters, the researchers set the phoneā€™s charging time from zero to 100 percent, and checked what percentage of the battery the smartphone gets in 15 minutes of charging. Next, to test the quality and ā€œenduranceā€ of the battery, the smartphones were subjected to a whole set of tests: at 100% brightness of the phone robot consistently performed an identical set of actions once an hour, until the battery was completely discharged.

Every hour the robot used the Internet 7.5 min, including video on youtube , took 5 photos with a pause of 3 seconds and without flash , navigated 1.15 min and called and answered the phone total duration of the call 2.5 minutes . There were also 2 social media notifications on the smartphone within an hour. This method of battery research was introduced in order to bring the test closer to a typical userā€™s day. According to the results of battery research, the highest scores in this category were Huawei Mate 10 Pro 4.5 points , Samsung Galaxy S8 4.09 and Galaxy S8 Plus 4.01 .

In terms of other study parameters, the Apple iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8 and iPhone X were less sensitive to finger touch from the top 10 rankings, while the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone X models were slightly more difficult to use from the top 10.

It should be noted that with the emergence of new features in smartphones there are new tests. For example, concerning the unlocking of the device. Now the experts are testing the facial recognition feature and iris scan. In particular, they are trying to trick the function and check how it will work in non-standard conditions in the dark, against the sun, when a person is wearing glasses, etc. d. . The uniqueness of the joint research with ICRT ā€“ the possibility to objectively compare smartphones, because all of them passed absolutely identical tests.

The rating, based on the survey results, allows each consumer to make a choice based solely on their own preferences. Expect the results of the study of the new batch of smartphones, including the latest innovations, on the Roskachestvo website 2018.
