Samsung GALAXY NOTE20 and Samsung GALAXY NOTE20 ULTRA: what’s the difference?

Both models in the flagship lineup our test included the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G 512 GB and Galaxy Note20 256 GB have a 5G option but in America the Galaxy Note20 256 GB is sold in a version without 5G and an improved design. Leaving aside 5G this format is not yet supported everywhere , the main difference between the models is the quality and format of the display and the camera capabilities. Naturally, the difference in favor of the more expensive Ultra.

The Galaxy Note20 Ultra has a larger display 6.9 inches compared to the Galaxy Note20’s 6.7 , but the more significant difference is the refresh rate of the display and its higher resolution. The increased display refresh rate 120MHz will make scrolling through web pages and photos smoother, and the higher resolution display 1440×3088 vs 1080×2400 for the Galaxy Note20 will make the photos in your feed more detailed.

In many other parameters, the two smartphones are not much different from each other. They have the same chipsets, front cameras, speakers – with the only difference being that the Note20 Ultra has more RAM options. Even the difference in battery life is small: 4,300 mAh for the Galaxy Note20 versus 4,500 mAh for the Galaxy Note20 Ultra.

The 40,000 ruble price difference between the two is due to the Galaxy Note20 Ultra’s more advanced camera unit. The front block of the smartphone now has three cameras: telephoto, ultra-wide and wide-angle. They’ve toned down the zoom capabilities, but have added laser focus, better stabilization, and a maximum resolution of 108MP on the Note20 Ultra’s wide-angle camera. New cameras are now geared for TikTok and YouTube: you can make high-quality video with good sound without noise almost on the go. And when you consider that Samsung also fixed the night shooting, the Note20 Ultra becomes an indispensable gadget for anyone who creates a lot of video content every day.

Conclusion: All other things being equal, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra wins due to the front camera and the display with better detail. If shooting video is not your priority when choosing a smartphone, then the lower priced Galaxy Note20 can do everything else just as well as the Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra: why not the first place in the ranking?

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra after the first show promised to be the best model on the market. The manufacturers claimed this model as a smartphone for those who want to be able to perform complex tasks even on the road, to work with the most “heavy” documents, including presentations. For this purpose, increased the display, added more advanced software and improved the stylus S Pen – the main working tool. After our tests, however, the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra never made it to the top of our ranking, leaving the Galaxy S10+ 128 GB , the smartphone of 2019, at the top. What’s affected by this?

Galaxy Note20 Ultra, formally continuing the line of S20, but not the Note line, indeed in all technical parameters – the most advanced smartphone from Samsung to date. It has a large and bright AMOLED display, a powerful chipset, and three front cameras with enhanced resolution, which now surpass the Galaxy S10+ in photo and video quality, and thanks to a specially designed for video one of the front camera Galaxy Note20 Ultra shoots vivid videos with rich colors and good sound without interference. After more than 100 falls in our durability test, the gadget has only received a few scratches.

The weak point of the Note20 Ultra was the battery, the importance of which in this year’s testing program was increased from 5 to 10% in the weighting. Manufacturers are increasing the capacity of smartphones, but they are equipped with low-capacity batteries, which significantly reduces the functionality of the phone. The tests showed that at maximum display brightness the Note20 Ultra will work for 27 hours, at reduced brightness – 30 hours. In comparison, the Galaxy S10+ 128 GB at reduced brightness will last 39.5 hours, and at maximum brightness – 32.5.

Conclusion: As of today, the Note20 Ultra outperforms all other Samsung 2020 flagships in terms of photo and video quality, power and functionality enhanced with the stylus. But the technical superiority comes with a high price 120,000 Dollars and a relatively high-capacity battery.

Is there an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Note20 on the market?

There is ! Almost in sync with Samsung’s flagship Note lineup models Xiaomi has released several performance smartphones that have already been dubbed “semi-flagships. Among them the highest ranking was Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G 128 GB. It would not be quite fair to compare this smartphone to the Note20 Ultra, but it can easily compete with the Note20.

In terms of performance, this is a powerful gadget on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G platform with 6GB of RAM. It has a slightly smaller display diagonal 6.6 inches than the Galaxy Note20, nevertheless it is almost as bright and saturated in color. When reading at different angles or in bright sunlight, the readability of the display does not deteriorate. The display frequency is the same as that of the competitor: 60 Hz. Developers tightened up the software, and now the OmniVision photosensor produces high-quality photos, with rich colors and good contrast. There are also flaws: the experts reduced the overall score for the photo because of panoramic shooting and poor autofocus work. But the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G is significantly inferior in terms of video recording – a hobbyhorse of the Note20. Stabilization is almost useless, and the sound can be noisy and distorted.

Other disadvantages of this gadget include the lack of protection from both dust and water, as well as the inability to add additional memory in the microSD slot. On the plus side, the battery capacity: 46 hours of use at reduced brightness. And in this Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G is far ahead of Samsung smartphones.

A possible alternative to it – Mi Note 10 Lite 128 GB. In many ways it is similar to the Mi 10 Lite 5G: it has a high-quality display with high contrast and brightness and a powerful battery for 52 hours of work. The key differences from the “big brother” are in the camera and performance. The manufacturers use the Snapdragon 730G chipset with not the most efficient processor, which is no longer used in flagships. The second important feature is the redesign of the camera unit. Unlike the Mi 10 Lite 5G, the TV camera has been removed altogether, and the resolution on the main and ultra-wide cameras has been reduced. It has affected the quality of photos: gone option of optical stabilization, dropped the quality of wide-angle and zoom.

Conclusion: On a limited budget, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G and Mi Note 10 Lite 128 GB can be an alternative to the new Samsung Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G is more than three times cheaper at 23 650 Dollars , but only if you do not plan to use these smartphones for video shoots and are not hung up on photo quality. These models do not open new horizons, but successfully cope with the main tasks of a smartphone.

Smartphone for a blogger

To be a blogger is not cheap! The price difference of 40 thousand Dollars between the Samsung Galaxy Note20 and Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra is explained by the fact that the Galaxy Note20 Ultra has a more advanced camera unit, and the camera is the most important feature of a smartphone for almost every blogger. There are now three cameras on the front block of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra smartphone though we know that’s not the limit in smartphones : telephoto, ultra-wide and wide-angle. The manufacturer has reduced the zoom capabilities on them, but added laser focus, improved stabilization and a maximum resolution of 108 MP for the Note20 Ultra on the wide-angle camera.

The new cameras are now geared for TikTok and YouTube: you can make high-quality video with good sound without “noise” almost on the fly. And if we consider that Samsung also fixed the night shooting, the Note20 Ultra becomes an indispensable gadget for anyone who creates a lot of video content every day.
