Photo practice with the Nikon D7200: Auto ISO writes insurance

Reporting on sports and other events is one of the most difficult genres that require a good background and the right equipment for the job, because it’s a very dynamic scene to shoot. As a rule, the action is filmed from afar, so long focal-length optics are used. But in addition to the long focal length, a lens also needs high light transmission, which increases the accuracy and speed of autofocus.

A lot of interesting things happen at dusk or even under the cover of night. Even objects that look dull and boring in daylight become fabulous in darkness. But how can one capture the naked beauty of the night with the distinct charm of a real night?? The answer is simple: the Nikon D7200 has an Auto ISO function that insures when choosing the optimal shutter speed and keeps you from sinking into total blackness. It remains to check the function in practice..

First of all, the AutoISO has a shutter speed threshold which the auto uses to determine the optimal ISO setting. if you use auto mode for the shutter speed threshold, the camera will keep the shutter speed no shorter than the lens focal length taking into account the cropping factor, i.e. a safe shutter speed for a 50mm focal length is 1/80 sec and raise the ISO all the way up to the set maximum. Slow shutter speeds become more useful. The settings allow you to adjust the value of the safety shutter speed in two steps plus and minus.

Slower shutter speeds are good for fast action or moving subjects, slower ones are good for slow ISO speeds in two cases: when you can stabilize the camera, or when you use a lens with built-in stabilization system.

This shutter compensation makes sense in semi-automatic modes P/A/S , while in fully manual mode you can directly set the shutter speed and aperture as per subject, and the right exposure is ensured by the automatic control by changing ISO.

I took these test shots in quite dark places and on the streets of New York at night. In the ISO algorithm, the camera used the “Auto” setting for shutter speed selection, and the ISO threshold was set to 12800. As you can see from the night scene, theory and practice are the same – the automation selects a safe shutter speed given the focal lengths recalculated to accommodate the cropped image.

By the way, all pictures taken even at the threshold of 12800 ISO, have a decent quality, especially if you work with them in a RAW-converter.
