Philips company announced that the scientists from NASAā€™s Applied Research Institute for Astronaut Health TRISH will use in their research the Philips SmartSleep smart headband. The research is part of the Human Research Program, whose mission is to inform the public about the challenges people face in space, as well as to study technologies that can make it easier for astronauts.

The sleep patch will be involved in two experiments on the effects of sleep on the cognitive abilities and mental health of astronauts. The study will last two years. During this time, experts plan to find out if it is possible to improve the quality of sleep during long-duration space flights and improve brain function using different protocols of auditory stimulation.

Philips SmartSleep sleepband captures deep sleep phases thanks to SmartSleep sensors, and then amplifies their activity in real time.

Philipsā€™ patented algorithms, developed in collaboration with leading experts and neuroscientists, create sound signals that increase the amplitude of brain activity waves during deep sleep phases, thereby increasing a personā€™s productivity upon awakening.

The effectiveness of the patch has been proven in clinical studies. In addition, as part of the research Philips will share its own technical expertise with the Institute ā€“ this will help scientists program the devices for different forms of sleep stimulation and extract data for further analysis.

ā€œItā€™s a great honor that the experts

Institute for Applied Research on Astronaut Health

chose our Philips Smart Sleepband

SmartSleep

For this research. We are confident that the results will be beneficial not only for the exploration of space, but also for the lives of millions of people who have trouble sleeping,ā€ said John Frank, head of Sleep

and

Respiratory

Care

. ā€“ This kind of research is very important because it helps to better explore the relationship between sleep quality and mental performance. We hope this collaboration will lead to important new insights and, in the future, help make healthy sleep more accessible to everyone.ā€.

TRISH Institute will conduct the following studies:

  • Optimizing Auditory Stimulation for Cognitive Improvement OASIS : for two months, 24 people will use the Philips SmartSleep patch at home, performing daily NASA Comprehensive Cognitive Testing. Specialists will study the effects of auditory stimulation on specific areas of the brain responsible for the thinking process. Researchers will also determine if sleep patterns predict mental alertness over the next day, and evaluate the optimal use of SmartSleep.
  • Improving sleep efficiency and recovery function: the laboratory study will last 7 days and will involve 12 participants, who will wear the Philips SmartSleep sling. In the course of the experiment, TRISH scientists will simulate sleep conditions during a space flight and find out whether the patch improves cognitive functions during the daytime in a period of chronic lack of sleep and whether it can compensate for the lack of energy caused by the inertia of sleep after a sudden awakening.

Weā€™re always looking for technologies that can reduce the risks to human health and performance, especially during long-duration spaceflight,ā€ says Dorit Donoviel, PhD, director of the Applied Research Institute for Astronaut Health TRISH . ā€“ Weā€™re interested in making astronauts more productive without the need for medication, and are exploring solutions that might improve their sleep quality. With Philips

SmartSleep

We aim to evaluate the relationship between sleep and human performance, and hope the solution will clarify how sleep quality affects astronaut behavior and health.ā€.

The Philips SmartSleep Smartband seems intriguing with its promise of improving sleep quality, but does it really live up to its cosmic name? Has anyone tried this device yet and experienced any noticeable difference in their sleep patterns? Iā€™m curious to know if itā€™s worth investing in for a more restful and rejuvenating sleep experience.
