Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS compact camera review

Discrimination against photographers on the basis of their love of extreme adventures seems to be going back in history. The newest protected cameras are increasingly obtaining not only durable bodies, but also highly developed functionality which was previously characteristic only of the older “premium” models. The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS is a great example and arguably the best protected point-and-shoot compact camera on the market.

Most notable in a novelty a fast zoom lens with an aperture of 2.0 at the short end of the focal lengths. Unlike older models of the same brand like XZ-1 in this case the lens promises not only artistic expressiveness but also quite a specific practical benefit: as a rule underwater photography is connected with poor light exposure and high aperture ratio in such conditions can help a lot. The TG-1 is capable of standing safely at 12 meters underwater plus you can drop it from 2 meters and leave it in the sand with no fear .

Interesting decision of the developers to equip the compact with an advanced OLED display, also a previously rare option in the lower higher class. To be surprised with high-speed CMOS-matrix with backlight, Full HD video recording function, availability of built-in GPS-receiver and electronic compass with movement logging system is not necessary. But you can still marvel at the compact’s cutting-edge Sharpness System, borrowed from the Pen system cameras, and the sound-recording technology Olympus developed for its popular brand recorders.

The company also promises a greater range of abilities and skills, achieved through optional accessories. For example, the TG-1 can be outfitted with a waterproof fisheye lens and a tele conversion lens, and the TG-1’s depth-of-depth capability can be upgraded from 12m to 45m. It’s hard to know whether to buy such a device in case you do not often dive and drop the camera, but highly appreciate the advanced technical equipment. But if extreme sports are your thing, it’s hard to find a tougher, more secure camera.
