MyST Nail 4 in-ear headphones: what really gets us going?

Red Bull soars… While the lucky ones are singsongy soaring, I deeply thought: a multi-driver headphones, too, promise the same flight in dreams and in reality

? Whether or not this is true is easy to check: let’s immerse ourselves for a few days in the Nail 4, a multi-driver model from MyST’s in-canal lineup. I found these ears, based on two armature receivers, so appealing that I skipped over the “three” – Nail 3 in one leap, leaving it for the foggy later. When the drive is more than usual, it turns you on and fascinates: both the design and the sound. So now’s the time to lighten up

Appearance and ergonomics

One can skip over the kit, anticipating the wooing process: everything here is the same as it was in past reviews of “nails” – MyST Nail 1, MyST Nail 2, MyST Nail 2×2. In the kit we have the headphones themselves, and everything else can be found on the Mycroft website.Su or in an audiophile’s own arsenal.

Externally, the ears are a little bit fatter. Now it’s not a “casing” from a “small” gun, but rather a Makarov cartridge with a diameter of about one centimeter. Material – aluminum, shape – cylindrical, with a smooth rounding from the body to the sound tube, which, as it should be, covered with a mini filter to protect against sulfur. The wire is very strong and nice, made of silver-plated copper and armed with a Neutrik 3,5 mm jack.

The body of the headphones is elegantly crafted and invites you to touch yourself pleasantly every time. On the left earpiece, like a tattoo, engraved logo “MyST” and the Latin “L”, that is – for the left ear. On the “right Twix stick” there is another engraving – “Nail” and, quite logically, a Latin “R” – for the right ear. The diameter of the sound tube is about 4 millimeters. On the back side – four black dots, these mini holes, apparently, regulate the quantity and quality of bass.

In my ears Nail 4 headphones sat, “as the doctor prescribed”. All beautiful, clear and maximally pleasant. For me at least, they fit without nagging or irritation. Having found in my stash nozzles from the set of Shure and Westone canals, I finally got ready to spread the “wings of the Red Bull.

Sound

The listening was done with MyST DAC 1866OCU V.2, Lotoo paw Gold, Sony PCM-D100, Hifiman HM-601, QLS QA-360. With all sources the headphones played at the proper level.

I would describe the sound of MyST Nail 4 as massive, “rich”, with a nicely worked out mid-bass and bass in general. The middle is served beautifully and in detail. The high frequencies are slightly accentuated, a little crumbly, but not fanatical – so that it is perceived as a “chip”. Very nice turned out.

You can grumble a little bit about most multidriver models: their music space is kind of “pumped up” and shot by the “reflection. It feels like the sound is walking around the cave and then bursting out onto the stage. However, in the case of the Nail 4, the reflection effect is not repulsive, it is instead mesmerizing and downright intoxicating. The wings, indeed, are beginning to grow… Wow!

For example, we put The Sisters of Mercy – vision thing. Dense drive sound, good punch, gloomy growling guitars, rolling bass cooperates tactfully with the bass drum… All this stuff is drawn on a dark melodic background. Andrew Eldritch’s vocals sound very beautiful and mesmerizing, woohooh!

“Back

What I paid

For anothermother fucker in a motorcade

Slamming through

Slamming through.”

Beautiful, gothic, gloomy… It’s just right. The high frequencies in this composition are a little bit scattered, but they do not strain, and very quietly harmonize with the rest of the range, as if sparkling with silver in the night sky…

Next track is “ribbons”. Awesome stuff, at Nail 4 I really took off at 5.26 minutes, and without doping Red Bull. Bye-bye, see you soon…

On my return, I suggest diving into “David Bowie – young americans” – for a contrast in sensation. With the overall darkly uneven playing, everything is easy and very melodic. The melody is served leisurely, “breathing”, the overall picture is drawn more in depth than in breadth, even with some 3D-effect. The presentation in layers, the instruments draw the “virtual space” nicely, or rather the depth of it, the background and the foreground. The saxophone sounds simply magical. It’s a little bit detached, but timbre-rich, velvety. Maestro’s vocal part is also velvety, without strains, charming the listener. The instruments sound gently, tenderly, without any urges to harshness. Very comfortable and musical. Velvety, detailed and melodic sound.

“All night

She wants the young American

Young American, young American, she wants the young American

All right

She wants the young American…”

The main difference in the entire MyST Nail lineup is comfort in everything, from the fit to the sound. You don’t want to take the headphones out of the place where they are so well seated. Just a holiday!

Bottom line

The tweeter is clean, a little crumbly, without obvious distortions and peaks. Everything as comfortable and decent as possible. When the hi-hat sounds, they clearly give off a “tsssyk” if it’s a cymbal touch, very precise and gentle. During the intense moments my ears can sprinkle a little bit, but not with sandpaper, but rather with a handful of silver dust.

The midrange is a little subdued, smooth and detailed. The middle part is soft, velvety, neat, but without losing the main thing – emotionality. All very elegant and melodic.

The woofer is with a decent punch, seems to be both tight and softened in places. They are massive, but do not crawl into the rest of the frequency range, do not hum, do not mutter, but sometimes give the impression of some “pumping” of space due to the lower register. However, this peculiarity also gives the overall sound picture a feeling of velvety and enchantment.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the multidriver model turned out very interesting. Yeah, the set is missing. Yes, no nice nameplates and boxes. But we need it? If there is the main thing – charming, comfortable and high-quality sound. Price in mycroft online store.su for this model – 19 900 Dollars. Yes, the price tag inspires respect, but the dual drive emitted by the MyST Nail 4 is, in my opinion, worth it.

Sound, comfort, price – for gourmets.

No accessories, the price is optional.
