Melitta Benz punched holes in a brass pot with the most common nail and covered the bottom with a blotter from her son’s notebook the word is forgotten now, it means blotter paper, t.e. Non-glued and low-pressure paper, in the structure of which there are a lot of small capillaries, so it quickly absorbs liquids such as ink . And… the goal was reached, the coffee was filtered! But if it’s that simple, can’t you make money from it??

The first steps into big business

On June 20, 1908, a housewife of 35 years patents her invention as a “utility model” and, with an initial capital of 72 pfennig less than one German mark , registers the company “M. Bentz, which only became known as Melitta in 1932.

Husband and sons were the first employees the production facility consisted of an eight-meter wide room in an apartment. Melitta’s husband Hugo personally demonstrated the new filtering method… in his own window, and the hostess invited friends and acquaintances for coffee tastings. Such simple, at first glance, advertising and marketing gave excellent results and the company began to actively develop and thrive.
