Magnat Quantum 508 Tower speaker test

Quantum is a new lineup in the German Magnat range. The Quantum 500 series is in the midrange Hi-Fi range, unlike the top-end Quantum 900 models. The 508 Tower pair under test is the oldest of the floor-standing series.

CONSTRUCTION FEATURES: Slender, graceful ‘stellas’ with an unusually slender front bezel measuring just 15cm wide. The panel has rounded ribs to minimize sound diffraction. Beauty is a sacrifice – you can’t mount large speakers in a panel this small. Therefore, getting out of the difficult situation, the German developers completed the three-way speaker with six drivers: four woofers are responsible for the bass part of the sound. Together these small speakers give decent bass performance, making up for their modest individual size in numbers. The front panel is enclosed by fine-meshed all-metal grilles, acoustically transparent and very reliable when it comes to protecting the speakers from damage.

The body of the speakers is made of MDF, the front panel is 22 mm thick. The cabinet surface has the options of cherry, beech, black or silver finish. For stability the cabinet is equipped with a wide plastic stand. You can screw steel spikes or rubber feet into the base, both included with the speaker. Which mounting option you choose depends on your room’s flooring. A reflex port on the cabinet reflects the elliptical rearward-facing Air Flex port.

Quantum 500 series is designed with all the demands placed on contemporary high definition DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD formats in mind. The redesigned F-Max Plus tweeter has a lightweight, 25mm soft pure silk dome. The tweeter is driven by neodymium magnets and equipped with a new damping system. According to the manufacturer, the tweeter maintains linearity of frequency response up to 55 kHz.

The midrange drivers are located above and below the tweeter, in line with the d’Appolito pattern customarily used by Magnat engineers in their products. The sound is produced by aluminum cones with a diameter of 110mm. Winged metal for the cone is chosen for its rigidity and increased resistance to bending and stray waves on the cone surface. At the same time, the aluminum is light enough that the cone can accurately handle fast sounds. Diffuser support basket made from non-resonant ABS. Non-magnetic chassis material made with Deep Space technology, creating room for the use of long-stroke voice coils and dual magnet system. Through-hole in the magnets ventilates the voice coil and protects it from overheating. Quantum 508 Tower woofers are made in the image of the midrange speakers and are the same size. Also note that the speakers are magnetically shielded, so they’re great for front speakers in a home theater.

Speakers crossovers use expensive elements: film capacitors and inductors with an air core. Quantum 508 Tower has a section frequency of 350 and 3200 Hz. Speakers allow two-wire connection thanks to four gold-plated terminals. The high sensitivity of the speakers, equal to 93dB, makes them uncritical to the power of the amplifier used.

AUDIO QUALITY: the usual for Magnat acoustics midrange and the upper register are characterized by good detail. High octaves

Are elaborate right down to the wire. Cymbals and bells ring out clearly, though they have a kind of “roughness” that can become harsh at high volume. Clear midrange with recognizable instrument timbres are a bit dry. Except for the brass brass, which bursts with life giving an almost carnival feel to the sound.

Speakers withstand a crisp upper-bass line and accented electric guitar chords resonate pleasantly in your chest. The mid-bass of the Germans is also not without articulation, which is surprising for a speaker of such a subtle appearance. However, some sound dryness is inherent in the Quantum 508 Tower at the lower end of the frequency spectrum.

The scene is built with average width and volume, but the directions to the virtual sound sources the speakers withstand accurately, although the spatial resolution on the tutti of large orchestras is not too high. The most even frequency balance and stereo contrast is at a moderate volume. With increasing volume the sound gets brighter, the midrange gets squeezed, the top gets harsh, and the bass gets progressively blurred.

PRICE: $940.

SUMMARY

AVAILABILITIES: Modern design upbeat, clear top end. Clear top bass and treble.

CONDITIONS: some dryness and schematic timbres, too bright sound at high volume.

CONCLUSIONS: The Quantum 508 Tower will appeal to fans of detailed, colorful highs. Slimness is not unreasonable women will love the stylish design and compact size.
