LG Electronics LG has successfully demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress MWC -2012 the world’s first-ever session switching between voice and video over LTE. During the demonstration, based on LG’s own technology, users switched between high-definition video and high quality voice transmission modes without interrupting the phone conversation. Real-time video streaming service on LTE network was also demonstrated.
The process of switching from a voice call to a video call complies with the IP Multimedia Subsystem IMS Profile for Conversational Video Service specification, an industry standard established by the GSM Association for managing video and voice data over LTE. This year LG will release smartphones that support LTE and Conversational Video Service, respectively.
– LG will continue to play a leading role in LTE by developing and implementing innovations that provide real benefits to consumers,” said Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications. – The LTE sector is rapidly evolving, and our technology for switching between voice and video calls is ideally suited for industry-wide applications.
Last year at MWC, LG successfully demonstrated Voice over LTE VoLTE and video calling technology. Before LTE, HD video calls were not possible because 3G networks could not handle the data volumes at the speeds required for HD video.
I am curious to know how successful LG’s video call over the 4G network at MWC-2012 was. Did it display seamless connectivity and high-quality video and audio? Also, what were the main advantages of using 4G for video calls compared to previous network generations?
