LG buys Daewoo Entec to keep water clean

On August 31, 2011, LG Electronics announced the acquisition of Daewoo ENTEC, a market leader in wastewater treatment services. The acquisition is part of LG’s expansion in the water treatment sector, in which the company has steadily expanded its acquisitions and investments, including the joint venture LG-Hitachi Water Solutions Co., which will begin operations in October.

Through this acquisition, LG will be able to offer a comprehensive water treatment solution. The acquisition combines LG’s advanced engineering, procurement and construction EPC and membrane filter manufacturing capabilities with Daewoo ENTEC’s market-leading operations and maintenance O&M services.

Since entering the water treatment market in the second half of 2010, LG has completed turnkey EPC projects for corporate customers for medium- to large-scale ultrapure water, clean water and wastewater treatment facilities. Building on Daewoo ENTEC’s extensive experience, including serving Korean municipalities, LG plans to expand its water treatment business in the service sector for government agencies and actively seek new projects in the global market.

“The global wastewater treatment market is huge and expected to be over $430 billion this year alone,” said Young-ha, Lee, chief executive officer CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance. – “This market is expected to grow at an average of 5% per year due to increased pollution and the effects of climate change, and we see the water treatment business as a critical element of LG’s continued success.”.

In addition to providing end-to-end solutions services, LG is actively developing a new generation of water treatment technology. Last year LG obtained a patent for its Green-Membrane Bio Reactor G-MBR technology.

“By 2020, LG intends to become the world’s leading water treatment company,” added Mr. Lee. – “To achieve this goal, we will continue to develop new technologies and methods in addition to pursuing other acquisition and collaboration opportunities.”.
