Let’s do without water – washing with ozone and nylon

Is it possible to wash laundry without water? It sounds fantastic at the moment, but in fact it will be possible very soon. In Japan and Sanyo company even created such washing machine – Aqua AWD-AQ1.

Washing machines

In principle, it uses water, but very sparingly and not in all modes. For example, there is a program of washing with ozone: using a special device, oxygen from the air is converted into ozone, which is then sprayed on the things inside the drum and removes bacteria, odors, stains and dirt of organic origin.

The water needed for rinsing about 50 liters is stored in the tank, where it is purified with ozone again and can be used for the next wash. The Brits have gone even further in their designs, namely Stephen Berkin-Shaw.

Under his leadership, he created a washing machine which only needs 1 cup of water to wash! Together with the laundry and a glass of water, the tank holds balls – and not just any balls, but nylon ones, with a total weight of 20 kg and a diameter of just 2 mm.

Their secret is that the molecules are polarized, and therefore the balls literally suck the dirt out of the laundry. After washing, the balls fall through the grate into the machine tray where they are stored until the next time. The balls have a service life of more than 100 washings, then they need to be replaced with new ones.

This machine only exists as a prototype so far, unlike the Sanyo model, which is already on sale in Japan. There is information that in the U.S. are conducting a similar development, only equipped with a washing machine in two drums: the inner is placed clothes, and in the outer nylon balls are placed.

Washing begins – two drums spinning, balls from the outer drum go into the inner drum and interact there with the laundry. Shortly before the end of the washing process, the outer drum stops and the balls fall in, leaving clean clothes in the inner drum.

Another current development is eco-degradation: removal of dirt by ultraviolet light and air. UV Cleaner uses ultraviolet light and a powerful jet of air instead of water and powder. According to the developers themselves, these machines will not appear until 2020.
