Lawn care in summer

Many gardeners dream of a beautiful lawn on their property. But cutting and watering are not enough to turn grass into a real green carpet. Regular maintenance will help to significantly improve the quality of the lawn, the more so that today manufacturers of garden equipment offer a variety of tools that will take the most difficult part of the work.

Mowing certainly comes first. It should only be done in dry weather, regularly cutting no more than 3 to 4 cm of stalk at a time. But you don’t get an “English lawn” without extra care. One way or another, weeds will grow in it, and moss and straw will form on the surface of the turf due to undecomposed grass cuttings for various reasons. All this should be removed with a scarifier by combing the lawn area.

As well as scarifying their lawns, they also aerate – by piercing the topsoil to a shallow depth. Over time the soil under grass becomes significantly compacted, making it harder for oxygen, water and fertilizers to reach the roots.

The carbon dioxide in the topsoil slows plant development. This allows moisture, air and fertilizers to penetrate more easily into the ground without sticking to the surface. This is especially important on heavy clay soils, stagnant water, or heavily used lawns.

Scarifying and aerating is generally done in spring and summer. The number of applications during the season depends on the condition of the soil. Suitable tools for this are the complete electric scarifier-aerators such as the GARDENA ES 500 and the GARDENA EVC 1000.

It removes moss and weeds with sharp, parallel-hardened, galvanised stainless steel blades. The ES 500 has a 500 W motor and is controlled by hardened stainless steel springs. In case of wear and tear, they are easily removed with a handy handle and replaced with new ones.

GARDENA aerators have a variable penetration depth. The desired parameter can be set with the special setting lever. Large wheels with special tread facilitate movement over the lawn. They are compact and safe for transport or storage as they have folding blades and a detachable handle.

After aeration, apply a layer of coarse sand to the lawn surface to fill in the holes and make the soil more permeable. You don’t have to work the whole garden, you can only work on a visibly compacted area.
