Kitchen hoods: Dinner on the table, odors outside, design in the kitchen

Over the last ten years, a new attitude toward hoods has developed. It’s become a kitchen essential, just like the stove, fridge and sink. The cooker hood has a beneficial effect on the environment of the house in general, “locking” not always pleasant smell in the kitchen and cleaning the air from the whole bouquet of harmful substances.

But for me as a housewife, the fact that the hood resists the deposition of grease on the furniture is also important. Without a hood, grease deposits are literally everywhere: on cabinet doors, kitchen walls, windows and even flowers. And wiping it off these surfaces is a time-consuming, labor-intensive chore.

Air extraction hoods draw in air all the way around

– What are the first things to look for in a hood??

There are only two: performance and noise level. You often hear or read on forums that you should choose a more powerful extraction system.

But it is still better to calculate the required value by the generally accepted formula: Performance = P×B×12.

P – kitchen area, B – ceiling height usually 2.7 m , 12 – is a coefficient showing that, according to SES regulations, the air in the room should be renewed 12 times an hour.

noise level is more difficult to estimate, because it’s not always clear what speed you are specifying so we always try to find out when we write reviews .

The quietest hoods on the market today produce 28-40dB, the average for most models that are considered sufficiently comfortable is around 58dB.

You rarely need to turn on the top speed, in most cases it’s the first speed you’ll turn on, that’s the best basis for orientation.

Is there a difference between a regular cooker hood and one with perimeter extraction??

Both types of hoods require approximately the same amount of care: washing the grease trap cassettes and replacing the charcoal filters if you have them .

You’ll notice a subtle difference when you wipe the dust off the cabinet. An ordinary cooker hood has a filter grid in the suction area and should be cleaned under the tap or in the dishwasher.

And in the device with perimetric suction installed plate, it should be wiped with a normal kitchen rag with a drop of soap solution.

– I was told that a cooker hood can’t protect the kitchen from smells from downpipe neighbors – is this true??

That’s not quite right. Some hoods come with a so-called anti-return valve that lets air out of the kitchen only one way. If the selected model does not have such a device, it can be purchased separately and installed when installing the hood.
