Kettle Champion. The winner of the international Electrolux Design Lab 2015 competition has been announced

New York, America, October 20, 2015. The day before, the winner of the Electrolux Design Lab 2015 was announced at a gala event at Kattilahalli Venue in Helsinki. The best of more than 1,500 entrants was Jordan Lee Martin from the UK and his project titled Bloom. A jury of experts ceremoniously awarded the best concept in front of a large audience of 200 international media representatives, bloggers and partners of Electrolux.

Finalists in the international Electrolux Design Lab 2015 competition

Design Lab 2015 winner Bloom is the world’s most efficient kettle. Thanks to three special containers, it recycles excess steam and hot water and uses it for steam cooking, a sterilizer and an air purifier. It can be operated directly from a tablet or phone. Bloom teaches children how to work in the kitchen in a playful way, being absolutely safe due to a special protection system.

The best of more than 1,500 entrants was Jordan Lee Martin from the U.K. and his project titled Bloom

“This eye-catching, multi-functional concept is designed with real needs in mind and with unique technological solutions in mind. It not only inspires children emotionally, it also teaches them practical skills they need in the kitchen,” said Lars Ericsson, Head of Design at Electrolux, Chairman of the jury.

The runner-up prize went to Air Shield from Lithuanian participant Dominikas Badinas. The Air Shield is a baby stroller that creates its own microclimate with clean air for a baby. An expert Jury member commented: “This technologically advanced concept is based on the health needs of small children in today’s environment. You can say that it was created to save lives. In addition, the project will potentially be of interest to the market.”.

Honorary third place went to Jeongbin Seo from South Korea with his project Q.H.-air purifier and hula hoop in one device. A jury spokesperson commented: “A striking concept for the 21st century, it is both intriguing and inspiring due to its cutting-edge design with a high level of aesthetics.

The Audience Award, which garnered more than 4,300 votes on the official Design Lab website, went to Larissa Trindade from Brazil and her project called Weaver.

It is worth noting that the finalist of Design Lab 2015 from America Maria Pilyugina, who was not among the winners of the contest, was also highly recognized by the expert jury and the audience of the contest.

The theme of this year’s competition was “Happy & Healthy Kids”. It was focused on the search for innovative ideas for products, accessories, equipment and services in three areas: cooking, tissue care and air cleaning.

Running the competition

In 2015, 1,500 participants from 56 countries from all over the world applied for the Design Lab. There were three steps: first the TOP 100, then the TOP 35 and then the top six finalists, whose concepts were judged by Electrolux experts. In addition, the best project, determined by public vote, received the Audience Choice Award.

During the contest, participants had to choose different directions of work, approve the idea, develop the concept, create visual materials, model the project, and prepare the final presentation.

This year the best Design Lab 2015 work out of the six entries in the final was selected by a jury consisting of Lars Erikson, the competition chairman and head of design at Electrolux, Hanna Harris, program director of Helsinki Design week, and Fredrik Magnusson, founder and head of Roder Innovation.

About the Electrolux Design Lab competition

The Electrolux Design Lab competition aims to motivate and support young developers around the world, giving them the opportunity to show their vision of the appliances of the future. Supporting Electrolux’s ambition to be at the forefront of the home appliance evolution, the competition helps find new inspiring ideas and engage young talent. The grand prize of the contest is a six-month paid internship at Electrolux International Design Center. It should be noted that subsequently half of the winners of last years contest went on to work at Electrolux. In addition, the winner of the contest will receive 10,000 euros, the runner-up – 6,000 euros, and the third place winner – 4,000 euros. The author of the concept with the most online votes will receive a €2,000 audience prize.
