JVC Cinema Projectors 2014: Avatarā€™s famed Avatar tested Pure Black 3D technology in person

On December 2, 2014, the Sheraton Hotel in New York opened its doors to experts, installers and press representatives, who were invited to the annual and now traditional event: the American premiere of JVCā€™s 2014 model year cinema projectors. At the event, held by JVC and GC DIGIS, were presented projectors DLA-X900, DLA-X700 and DLA-X500, with a record level of natural and dynamic contrast.

Alexey Sokolsky, JVCā€™s projection business manager for America, took the welcome speech.

Mr. Sokolsky introduced the public to the new line and its technical improvements. As an industry leader in natural contrast ratio, the company was able to further improve this indicator in the new projectors:

  • DLA-X900R ā€“ 150 000:1
  • DLA-X700R ā€“ 120,000:1
  • DLA-X500R ā€“ 60 000:1

In addition, one of the upgrades was the introduction of dynamic contrast, implemented with the latest Intelligent Iris Lens. The Intelligent Iris is user-controlled on/off and achieves never-before-seen levels of dynamic contrast:

  • DLA-X900R ā€“ 1,500,000:1
  • DLA-X700R ā€“ 1 200 000:1
  • DLA-X500R ā€“ 600 000:1

The new products feature a sixth-generation DLA sensor with a pixel gap reduced from 0.5 nanometers to 0.3 nanometers, and an upgraded reticle polarizer. The brightness of the devices has been increased to 1,300 ANSI lumens.

Interesting is the fact that the new models are fully compatible with 4K input. And thanks to the new eshift 3 upscaling algorithm, you can enjoy 4K pictures even with a regular Blu-ray disc.

Other innovations include:

  • Optimized Multiple Pixel Control MPC processor with 8-band pixel frequency spectrum analyzer
  • new Clear Black function
  • Improved Clear Motion Drive CMD processor, which contributes to a significant reduction in artifacts when watching dynamic scenes
  • The ability to control projectors from a smartphone and tablet

Mr Sokolsky together with the general director of DIGIS Boris Eshkindym presented prizes to the installers who have shown the best results in 2013, as well as to the press representatives for highly professional publications on the JVC projection technique.

JVC Cinema Projectors seem to have made quite an impact in 2014 with their cutting-edge technology. Iā€™m really curious to know if the Pure Black 3D technology used in Avatar was able to enhance the overall viewing experience. Did it truly deliver impeccable black levels and create a more immersive 3D experience? How did this technology compare to traditional projectors? Would love to hear your insights!
