Hoover: 100 years of vacuuming the English way

Vacuuming in English – “to vacuum cleaner”. Hoover is the last name of the man who, in the early 20th century, sold the first appliances for cleaning houses, or as they were called then, “carpet cleaners”. The Hoover company created by him, which thrives to this day, now offers a whole range of home appliances and, of course, vacuum cleaners.

Hoover

Like Columbus

But, as is often the case in history, it was not Hoover who invented the vacuum cleaner, even though the machine bears his name. Invented the first vacuum cleaner Murray Spangler – a simple doorman who lived in the small town of Canton, Ohio, USA. He had asthma and was practically choking on dust. To help himself breathe, in 1908 he created a dust collector consisting of a soap dish, a fan, a pillowcase and a broom handle. After experiencing the beneficial effects of even such a simple device, Murray wanted to sell it to others. But he had no money for promotion or production. The patent was bought by William H. Hoover – manufacturer and seller of leather goods. It is unlikely he realized then that this acquisition will allow him to remain forever in history and immortalize his name, but in any case, the intuition did not fail the businessman, who, without wasting time, founded his company Hoover.

Hoover

Supply and demand

But here’s how to make sure people start buying new appliances? The question in business is not idle. Hoover has come up with a very interesting way: a newspaper ad was published in the Saturday Evening Post, which said that everyone can use a vacuum cleaner for a week, completely free of charge. In order to become a member of the action, it was necessary to leave an application in one of the best stores in the city. In this way, Hoover not only found customers, but also created a powerful network of reputable stores that promoted the products. This out-of-the-box approach gave the company a strong start, and within 5 years it had gone international and was selling vacuum cleaners in Canada, Britain and Scotland.

Hoover

Selling, improving!

Not only did Hoover sell the patented appliance, but under his direction, the company was working to improve it. In 1926, there was a whole system for dusting carpets: a metal rod gently knocked out the carpet, a brush swept away the dust and dirt, which fell into a dust bag. The advertising slogan read: “Hoovering, sweeping, sweeping, cleaning!”

In 1932 the production was opened in Perivale West London .

And in 1936, a landmark event for the development of cleaning technology – the first Hoover vacuum cleaner with a suction tube, which is an integral part of all modern vacuum cleaners, was patented.

World War II was no time for meticulous cleaning, as production was turned to military necessities: presses were used to make helmets and sewing machines were used to make parachutes. The factory has British and American military awards for its contribution to the victory.

A bit of a minor

Up to 80s of the last century, the company was doing fine, although it had to act in a competitive environment. But then there was an attempted reorganization, there were repeated changes of ownership – in general, the company has not been easy times.

Southern winds of change

In 1995, the Italian company Candy Group bought Hoover European Appliance and the right to represent the brand in Europe, North Africa and several Middle Eastern countries. Candy officially came to America in 1998. The first Hoover vacuum cleaner was sold in America in the early 2000s.

Today at the creation of new models of vacuum cleaners Hoover works not one team of engineers and designers, creating beautiful, fashionable and, most importantly, functional products. So over the years the well-known conceptual design bureau Momo Design has been working on the design of Hoover vacuum cleaners. They produce luxury products primarily for the automotive racing sector. The result of this “out of the box” cooperation are bright and innovative models.

Hoover – the generation of the future

In Europe and around the world, Hoover is recognized as a premium brand for quality and excellence.

Hoover strives to ensure that with each new model to pleasantly surprise consumers. Development work begins with a careful study of the needs and habits of consumers. The resulting data is then transformed into ideas, and the ideas are turned into new Hoover vacuum cleaners.

Hoover is always about innovation, technology and design. That allows the brand to exist and develop actively for such a long time.
