Here comes the trial: Is a mattress guilty of insomnia?

The 2017 Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded for research on circadian rhythms – our “biological clock”. Their failure leads to sleep disorders, stress and diseases. And an accomplice to this crime against health can be… an ordinary mattress! Let’s reason in fairness why you can’t sleep in your own bed:

The first charge. Hands and feet are getting sweaty

A hard mattress can cause circulatory problems. So make sure it is comfortable and orthopedic.

The verdict: the wrong mattress is to blame, like one that doesn’t have a comfort layer on top. Both spring and non-spring models often have polyurethane foam on the outside, but they can also be made of natural latex, polyester fiber, holofiber, batting, and other materials. Its purpose is to reduce pressure on the soft tissues and joints of a sleeping person.

Allegation two. Your nose can’t breathe

The reason is allergies. It can be caused by the latex emulsion that binds the coconut fibers in your mattress. “Unlike natural materials, new generation polyurethane foams are completely hypoallergenic. If you are allergic, look for models with CertiPUR certificate confirmed health safety,” – recommends Natalia Sverdlova, head of the “mattress blanks” department of FoamLine, the developer of ready-made solutions for foam mattresses.

The verdict: a mattress glued with a low-quality compound or one containing natural latex is guilty. Need to change!

Accusation three. It prevents the feeling of a deep pit

If the mattress is too soft or has lost its elasticity after long use, there will be no healthy sleep. Not only insomnia can occur, but also spinal problems.

The verdict: The mattress must be changed. For optimal support a model with a rigid base is needed.

Allegation four. Lumps and bumps make it difficult to lie down comfortably

In three or four years of use spring mattresses sag, the surface is no longer flat. The absorbent cotton is lumpy. Why create an air of squalor in your own bed??

The verdict: old quilted and sprung mattresses belong in a landfill. It is worth buying a firm, elastic and practical mattress instead.

Fifth indictment. Wake up the squeaks and grinds

The source of nighttime symphonies can be your bed, and not necessarily the body itself. Inside the mattress the metal parts of spring blocks rust and the wooden frame starts to squeak, the natural filling crunches.

The verdict: Orchestra has no place in bed. The mattress should be replaced, because it is possible to sleep as a baby only on the silent models.

Sixth accusation. Sweating

Sweating gets in the way of your sleep? The reason is the low hygroscopicity of the mattress, poor heat dissipation.

The verdict: The problem can be solved by bedding made of natural fabrics like linen – it absorbs water from the skin at high humidity, but not from the air. If minimum measures will not do, choose a more hygienic mattress material. “Polyurethane foam models have a honeycomb structure. It ensures good air permeability and therefore excellent ventilation,” – says Natalia Sverdlova. It is also important to dry the bed regularly after sleeping.

Charge seven. Often fidget in your sleep, can’t find a comfortable position

The mattress does not conform to the normal physiological posture of the sleeper.

The verdict: an orthopedic model which follows your body curves or has a memory effect is sufficient.

Allegation eight. In the morning my back hurts

Too soft support layer in the mattress does not provide the required support for the spine, especially the lumbar region of the spine.

Verdict: choose a model with a basic base, suitable in stiffness for your weight. Only the top layer can be soft, which the specialists call comfortable.

Charge nine. Itchy skin, a feeling of sand in the eyes

You have dust mites – in every gram of dusty mass there are more than a hundred of them. With uninvited guests come dermatitis, conjunctivitis and even asthma.

The verdict: It is possible to get rid of dust mites if the bedding is regularly exposed to hot sun or very cold temperatures. They also do not like special treatment with acaricide agents. Foam fillings tend not to take root.

Every third person on the Earth suffers from insomnia, and very often the source of the problem is in the bed itself. If at least one accusation against the old mattress is true, the first step towards a normal sleep would be the purchase of a new one.
