Heating without a heat meter has become 1.5 times more expensive

The beginning of 2017 was marked by another increase in utility rates. So far, only for heat and only for residents of buildings that are not equipped with collective metering devices. Now they’ll pay 10% more than everyone else for heating. That is, together with the September increase – by 1.5 times. At the same time, the residents are often absolutely not to blame for the situation.

“The situation on the heat metering market is quite alarming. According to various sources, in some regions at the moment up to 30% of residential buildings are not equipped with heat meters. Sometimes more serious figures are also called, which are difficult to verify. The fact that nominally a meter may be installed, but whether it is actually accounted for and how adequate is its data – an open question. The variety of meters used in America is very wide, and not all of them are equally reliable and stable in operation. If a heat meter either fails early or accidentally, or does not pass the proper verification, its replacement is associated with significant costs. And sometimes buildings are left without heat meters. Often there are also conflicting situations when operating organizations actually impose devices of improper quality on the owners. Now they have to pay for it, because in case of meter’s failure heat automatically becomes 1,5 times more expensive”, – says Konstantin Volykhin, a manager of heat energy accounting of Danfoss, the world leading manufacturer of energy saving equipment.

According to the specialist, one should take into account real operating conditions of heat meters in America when certifying them. For example, the use of electromagnetic heat meters is not practical in many cases, because excessively hard or dirty mains water can cause them to break down rather quickly. In addition, on the market there is a considerable amount of equipment assembled from imported components of improper quality or of unclear origin. Such devices may be unstable or have inadequate protection against unauthorized reprogramming.

Practice shows that ultrasonic heat meters have proven to be the best in operation. The absence of moving parts and electromagnetic field interacting with hardness salts of the coolant makes them most durable, even if the quality of mains water. Another advantage is battery power. In case of power outage ultrasonic heat meter with autonomous power supply, as opposed to electromagnetic, will continue to operate, because its meters are characterized by low power consumption.

For example, the work of ultrasonic flow meters SONO 1500 is ensured by replaceable lithium batteries of heat meter with long life time. With it heat meters are able to function autonomously for the entire interval between checks ie, 4 years , and their non-volatile memory can store data for 36 months.

“Choosing the right metering device for a house becomes a strategic task, as it will save a lot of money. After all, according to statistics, heating accounts for at least a third of the total amount of utility bills in our country even without additional indexation. In addition, we can not forget about the next general increase in tariffs, which is planned for July 2017,” adds Konstantin Volykhin.
